Superstorm Sandy Cannot Stop NJ Couple?s Wedding reports Marlows-Diamonds

(EMAILWIRE.COM, November 16, 2012 ) West Midlands, UK -- Superstorm sandy did interrupt the lives of so many on the East Coast of the United States, including those who were planning to say ?I Do? on the Jersey Shore.

After the storm washed away some couples wedding dreams, one couple became determined to put on a ceremony in their dream location anyway.

Bride Tiffany Kellner may have looked to be in a state of disbelief, but her and her to-be husband?s tenacity earned them the day they had prepared for.

The couple had planned on the Channel Club in New Jersey as the site for their special day. However, the super storm had other plans and the couple was unable to enjoy their placing. On Tuesday, the owner of the property called Tiffany and told her there was no way the Sunday wedding would work. The building had been severely flooded and there was a lack of power.

Michael Kellner stated ?It absolutely was her worst nightmare. This day she?s been dreaming of for years and years, and it finally came and it seemed like it could not work out.

Tiffany recalled, "Michael just stood there, just holding me in the living room, crying. He goes, 'We'll get through this, what do you want to do?' I said, 'I love you and I want to marry you,' and so he goes, 'OK, we'll make it happen.'"

The two started frantically search for a venue, which is not easy following the aftermath of such a large disaster.

Tiffany?s mother, Katie Downey, stated "If it had electric, she went in, and we just begged people."

Two days later, their wedding DJ told the couple of a place called Branches. The couple scrambled to book the place and were able to do so.

The couple was able to pull everything together within a day, and once the vows were finally exchanged, it was clear that even mother nature?s fury can only stall, but never extinguish, love.

"It's the fairy tale wedding and she looked so beautiful." Said Downey.

Train kills four at U.S. parade for troops

By Greg Botelho and Joe Sutton, CNN

November 16, 2012 -- Updated 1713 GMT (0113 HKT)

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • NEW: Sgt. Maj. Gary Stouffer and Sgt. Maj. Lawrence Boivin died at the scene
  • NEW: Sgt. Joshua Michael and Sgt. Maj. William Lubbers died at a hospital
  • The last truck in the parade is hit by a train, a police spokesman says

(CNN) -- A train rammed into a flatbed truck carrying participants in a West Texas parade saluting U.S. troops, killing four people and injuring several others, a police spokesman said.

The incident happened around 4:30 p.m. Thursday, during the "Hunt for Heroes" event in Midland. According to the group Show of Support, these festivities -- including a banquet and, after that, an "all expense paid whitetail deer hunt" -- are to honor members of all branches of the U.S. military.

The last flatbed truck in the parade was crossing tracks when an eastbound train slammed into it, said Midland police spokesman Ryan Stout.

Some people were able to jump off the truck in time.

First responders found two dead at the scene, while two others were later pronounced dead at Midland Memorial Hospital, Stout said. Ten other people were treated and released at the hospital, while five remained hospitalized Thursday night, one of them in critical condition.

Army Sgt. Maj. Gary Stouffer, 37, and Army Sgt. Maj. Lawrence Boivin, 47, were pronounced dead at the scene. Army Sgt. Joshua Michael, 34, and Army Sgt. Maj. William Lubbers, 43, died at Midland Memorial Hospital.

Five others continue to be treated at University Medical Center in Lubbock. One remains in critical condition.

Parade attendee: 'I'm waving at these guys and then you ... find out this happened'

Authorities don't yet know why the truck was on the tracks as the train arrived at the crossing, Stout said.

The National Transportation Safety board will initiate an investigation Friday that will include review of video from a camera on the train.

The gates and lights at the intersection were working at the time, and the train's two-member crew sounded the horn prior to impact, according to Tom Lange, a spokesman for Union Pacific Railroad. The train included more than 80 rail cars carrying double-stacked containers, he said.

The NTSB said it has not confirmed whether the crossing gates and signals were active at the time of the accident.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with family and friends of those affected," Lange said, adding that Union Pacific employees are on site and more are heading that way to investigate.

Lange said the train itself is operational and its crew was not injured. They are being offered counseling, he said.

BP to pay record Dh16bn fine for Gulf of Mexico oil spill

LONDON // British oil giant BP has agreed to pay US$4.5 billion (Dh16.52bn), the largest criminal penalty in United States history, for the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, a person familiar with the deal said yesterday.

The person said that two BP employees face manslaughter charges over the death of 11 people in the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig that triggered the massive spill.

The person added that BP will plead guilty to obstruction for lying to the US Congress about how much oil was pouring out of the ruptured well.

The largest previous corporate criminal penalty assessed by the department of justice was a $1.2bn fine imposed on drug maker Pfizer in 2009.

BP said that the proposed settlement would not include civil claims under the clean water act and other legislation, pending private civil claims and state claims for economic loss.

The Deepwater Horizon rig, 80 kilometres off the Louisiana coast, sank after the April 2010 explosion.

The ruptured well spewed millions of barrels of crude oil into the sea, soiled sensitive tidal estuaries and beaches, killed wildlife and shut vast areas of the Gulf of Mexico to commercial fishing.

The spill exposed lax government oversight and led to a temporary ban on deepwater drilling while officials and the oil industry studied the risks, worked to make it safer and developed better disaster plans.

BP's environmentally friendly image was tarnished, and independent gas station owners who fly the BP flag claimed they lost business from customers who were upset over the spill.

The BP chief executive, Tony Hayward, stepped down after the company's repeated gaffes, including his statement at the height of the crisis: "I'd like my life back."

Intel Haswell: ?Mobile computing is not limited to tiny, low-performing ...

That was Intel?s battle cry two months ago when its next-generation core, aka Haswell was introduced, see at the very end of this video report:

IDF 2012: Intel shows new Haswell chips [networkworld YouTube channel, Sept 11, 2012]

Intel?s David (Dadi) Perlmutter showed demonstrations of systems running on its new Haswell processor, due in 2013, at the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco on Sept. 11. ? The technology demo of Haswell vs the 3d generation Ivy Bridge shows the same core performance but running at less then half the power ? ?Next year we are going to fit the best performing graphics and media capabilities on mother earth that will fit into extremely thin, extremely nice, extremely sneak form factor. So mobile computing is not limited to tiny, low-performing devices?.

A detailed analysis published 2 days ago (Nov 13)? concluded:

Intel?s Sandy Bridge core served as an impressive starting point, with unmatched performance in the x86 ecosystem. Haswell builds on this foundation, with powerful ISA extensions and a substantially more aggressive execution core and cache hierarchy. Moreover, Haswell is the first Intel core that will take full advantage of the 22nm FinFET process technology. While the Ivy Bridge graphics architecture is new, the CPU core was mostly unchanged. More importantly, the circuit design was focused on a low-risk and faster migration to a new process, rather than achieving peak performance, efficiency or density.

?

Overall, we estimate that a Haswell core will offer around 10% greater performance for existing software, compared to Sandy Bridge. For workloads using the new extensions, the gains could be significantly higher. In theory, AVX2 and FMA can boost performance by 2?, but the impact on most vectorizable workloads will be much lower. Research from AMD has shown that lock elision gains 30% for the right workloads, although the benefits depend strongly on the actual concurrency.

?

Haswell will be the first big x86 core to compete against ARM-based cores in tablets. While the performance will be dramatically higher, the power budgets are very different. Haswell SoCs will reach 10W, while competing solutions are often closer to 4W. The real question is the relative efficiency of Haswell SoCs, and the advantage of the massive x86 software ecosystem. Fortunately, Windows 8 provides an opportunity to accurately measure performance and efficiency. The results will inject some hard data into discussions that have been otherwise vacuous and largely driven by marketing.

For details see the whole Intel?s Haswell CPU Microarchitecture [Real World Tech, Nov 13, 2012] article.

The next-generation Haswell was presented at the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco as (source):

  • 4th Generation Intel Core Microprocessor, built on 22 nm process technology
  • Next Generation Intel HD Graphics with Microsoft DirectX 11.1, Open GL 4.0, OpenCL 1.2 support
  • Significant 3D and media performance improvement
  • Three Simultaneous Display, HDMI, DisplayPort, with high-resolution up-to 4Kx2K
Abbreviations: PEG ? PCI Express Graphics; IMC ? Integrated Memory Controller; LLC ? Last Level Cache; DMI ? Direct Media Interface; DDR3L (2 channels) ? Double Data Rate type THREE (3) synchronous dynamic random access memory Low-voltage; 4Kx2K ? 4096 x 2160 native resolution corresponding to the highest LCD Monitor resolution such as the 36.4? (92 cm) DuraVision FDH3601, the highest resolution of the Digital cinema, as well as 4K UHDTV (also called 2160p).

Then it goes into different type of client platforms, code named Shark Bay as follows (leaked by a Chinese ?bigpao007? user information):

which means the following incorporation varieties of the Haswell into the various Shark Bay client platforms:

  • The standard voltage (SV) quad-core Haswell-QC with GT3/GT2 graphics core
  • The standard voltage (SV) dual-core Haswell-DC with GT2/GT1 graphics core
  • and the Lynx Point-H PCH (Platform Controller Hub) separate chip for both of them?
  • The ultra low voltage (ULV now renamed ULT ? probably for ULTra) dual-core Haswell ULT with GT3/GT2/GT1 graphics core and Lynx Point-LP PCH (Platform Controller Hub) within the same Multi-Chip Package (MCP, also called MCM ? Multi-Chip Module)
  • Wireless networking modules code-named Wilkins Peak with the top level ?Wilkins Peak 2? supporting 2T2R (2 Transmitter, 2 Receiver) 802.11ac and Bluetooth. Intel should also support 2.4GHz and 5GHz dual-band, and the theoretical peak speed is 1750Mbps (1300Mbps +450 Mbps). The new module will be backward compatible with the current 802.11b/g/n.
  • Gigabit Ethernet LAN controller chips code-named Clarkville specifically Clarkville-LM for which no more information known yet

Intel?s David (Dadi) Perlmutter talks Haswell, perceptual computing [EE Times YouTube channel, Sept 12, 2012]

Intel?s general manager of architecture talks about the firm?s upcoming fourth generation core microprocessor, Haswell, and some of the new functionality it will enable on upcoming ultrabooks, including gesture and voice recognition.

Intel CPO Talks About Haswell Progress and More in IDF Keynote [Intel? Premier IT Professionals, Sept 11, 2012]

What?s a CPO?
Chief Product Officer. And at Intel that is Dadi Perlmutter who is also an executive vice-president.
He delivered today?s opening keynote at the Intel Developer Forum (IDF) on Collaborating to Shape the Future from Datacenter to Devices. So while developers are the key focus on this conference, there are topics that are of interest to IT professionals as well.
Instead of the rah-rah of some of the previous IDFs, Perlmutter began with a subdued acknowledgment of the 9/11 anniversary. That subdued approach carried over to much of the rest of his presentation as there were no big new product unveilings?only a progress report on offerings Intel has already announced.

Briefly, here?s the status report:

  • The 4th generation Intel Core, aka Haswell, is on track for launching next year. It is designed with mobility in mind, based on 22 nm technology, will have 20X [reduced] connected standby power [over the 2nd generation, and initially operating at about 10 watts], and delivers demonstrably smoother graphics.

  • New Ultrabooks based on the 4th generation processor will be thinner and faster, and will include Windows 8 in detachable, convertible, clamshell and other innovative form factors.

  • Intel is making progress on interactive PC experiences with a natural conversation beta using Nuance Dragon this year and moving into production in Q1 2012. Dragon runs native on the platform because it requires the high-performance of the CPU.
  • There are 20+ Atom Cloverdale chip tablets design wins coming with or shortly after the Windows 8 launch.
  • Smartphones based on the Intel Atom have launched with five partners and Intel says they are making steady progress with a competitive roadmap for smartphones.
As usual, there were some cool demos.
  • Gary Flood, President Global Products and Services of MasterCard demonstrated the company?s PayPass Wallet utilizing Intel Identity Protection Technology in conducting a secure traction using Near Field Communications (NFC) on an Ultrabook.
  • Dadi showed a new intelligent Coca-Cola machine with a QR Reader, microphone, camera, and wifi. Designed by SIA, the intelligent system utilizes the Core i7.
  • Gesture recognition with a 3D camera connected via USB showed natural hand and finger movements.
Dadi didn?t even use the term ?compute continuum? this year?which was the focus of CEO Paul Otellini?s keynote last year. But, in what was probably the biggest news for the developer audience, he announced a $1 million Perceptual Computing Developer Challenge. ?Perceptual computing? is all about ways you can interact with a computer beyond the keyboard and mouse, like voice, gesture, facial analysis, and more. Details for the contest and a free copy of the Intel Perceptual Computing SKD 2013 Beta are at intel.com/software/perceptual.

Note that the below article is based on the June 5, 2012 BIOS Enabling Rev 1.0 presentation from the BIOS Application Engineering Team of the Ultrabook for Shark Bay Platform Enabling (put online on the German 3Dcenter.org on Nov 9, 2012):
Intel Haswell ULT Processors Power Saving Features and Lynx Point-LP Chipset Detailed [WCCF Tech, Nov 12, 2012]

Intel?s Haswell ULT (Low Power) processors would be featuring new and improved features which would help them maintain a low power draw without sacrificing much of their performance. These features have been detailed along with the Lynx Point-LP chipset which would support the Haswell ULT Mobile processors.

Haswell ULT Low Power ? 24 MHz BCLK and C9/C10 Support

Back at IDF 2012, Intel demonstrated an Haswell chip which was capable of running an Unigine Heaven demo with a power draw of only 7.5 Watt. That is one significant improvement in power efficiency compared to its 22nm Ivy Bridge architecture. What helps Haswell ULT maintain such a lowerdraw, the answer is support for a new 24 MHz BCLK which will put the CPU at a standby operating frequency of 192 MHz at idle mode, once the user puts the CPU back in working mode the Haswell ULT chip would be restored to normal settings through software correction.

Haswell ULT CPUs would also arrive with new C-State modes ? C8, C9, C10. All three of which would only be available on ULT chips and not the desktop or normal mobile variants. In this state, the Haswell ULT would trigger Off state for VccIO and in C9/C10 state, the voltage would go down to 0V minimizing power draw to the max limit.

Haswell and Lynx Point Cross Thermal Management

Since Haswell ULT is a complete SOC (System On Chip), the Lynx Point-LP chipset and the CPU would be cross connected for easier thermal management between both. For instance, if the Lynx Point-LP exceeds its Tjmax limit, a signal would be sent to the Haswell-ULT issuing PCHHOT warning signal. Lynx Point-LP, to increase power efficiency gets rid of CPU overclocking, SATA IDE mode and DMI/FDI/PECI controllers. Lynx Point-LP upto 6 PCI-e 2.0 x16 lanes but doesn?t offer support for PCI-e 3.0. VGA output have been removed from the PCH, so you would have to rely on either DVI or HDMI for display connectivity. Connectivity on the Lynx Point-LP chipset includes 8 USB 2.0 ports, 4 USB 3.0 ports, 3 SATA III ports and integrated HD Audio.

Overall, Haswell ULT and Haswell is looking as a nice improvement to Ivy bridge when it comes to power efficiency and graphics improvement. The Haswell ULT and Haswell U Processors arrive in Q2 2013 whereas the desktop Haswell processors along with the 8 Series Lynx Point Motherboards are expected to debut in April 2013.

?

Preliminary roadmap information given out under NDA by Intel at the same time was also 3 days ago put? on the German 3Dcenter.org online from the June 5, 2012 Shark Bay Haswell ULT/Lynx Point-LP -Intel? ME 9.5 FW Features Overview Rev 1.1 presentation:

In August there was the following roadmap leak as well which seems to be less than the above one: Intel?s Fourth Generation Haswell Mobile Processors to Launch in Q2 2013, New Ivy Bridge Mobile Chips in Q4 2012 [WCCF Tech, August 7, 2012]

The latest Intel roadmap leak has confirmed that Haswell M-Series (Mobile) processors would launch in 1H of 2013 along with newer Ivy Bridge mobile chips in Q4 2012 and Q1 of 2013.

The roadmap shows that Intel?s fourth generation processors known as Haswell would launch in Q2/Q3 2013 featuring a new 22nm Tri-gate architecture which would bring improved IPC performance over Ivy Bridge.

Real Estate 101: Marketing Is Really What Business Is About

Let?s Talk Marketing

We?re starting the part when most perk up their ears. Some say it?s an art that?s learned over years. Still others decry its materialistic start as they stroll down the isles and stuff goods in their cart.

Whatever your view, I don?t honestly care. Your business needs marketing to get it?s fair share. So pull out your notepads and uncap those pens. Today we?ll discuss the means to your end.

If you take nothing else from this blog post, remember the following:

Marketing is the most important aspect of your business. It will determine your success or failure more completely than all other aspects of your investing career. If you are not willing to commit to marketing, stop reading this article. Stop studying Real Estate. Stop kidding yourself and pretending that you want success.

It?s that important.

If you are still reading this, let?s talk about marketing.

Why Market?

Several years ago I was shopping for new carpets in my house. I scheduled estimates from several companies. Most were referred by friends or business contacts. One of the companies I called was a big advertiser. I saw their ads on TV almost every day. I heard them on the radio and even got postcards in the mail. When all the estimates for my new carpets came in, I was shocked at the high price of the big advertiser. Their quote was more than double the second highest price!

A few months later I met one of the company owners at a friend?s Independence Day picnic. He was a great guy and we got along well. During our conversation I told him about the experience I?d had with his company. He gave me a candid and direct response.

He said, ?I get so many leads that if 1% turned into business, I?d have to close. I?d have too many installations. There aren?t enough good installers. People that hire my company get a good product and great installation. I do so much advertising to ensure that my profits are big and my headaches are not. ?

Proper marketing drives leads. Leads give you the freedom to choose the amount of business and profit to achieve your goals.

Marketing Basics

Developing a successful marketing plan starts with mastering the 3 M?s: market, medium and message. Each aspect represents a basic building block necessary to attract new clients. The key is pairing the correct message and media with your target demographic. When matched correctly, the 3 M?s of marketing produce results.

Market

The market is the group or groups of people who you want to attract with your advertising campaign. For our purposes, these are people who own specific types of properties within our target market. The types of properties that these people own will be dependent on the exit strategy you?ve established to meet your particular goals. In order to maximize the return on your investment dollars, you?ll first want to clearly and explicitly define this group.

The following are three examples of the same market. Each derivation more explicitly defines the targeted group. More specific targeting will lead to more effective results.

Broad: ?? ??? ?Owners in the city?s Richmond section that are interested in getting an offer on their house.

Revised:?? ?Motivated sellers in the city?s Richmond section who have a lot of equity in their properties.

Explicit: ?? ?Individuals or corporations who own single-family residential dwellings which are located within the region constrained by Stanley Street, Roper Street, Arlington Place, and Charles Way on the North, south, east and west perimeters, respectively. The property owners being targeted should have at least 50% equity in their properties. They must also have an unpaid tax balance greater than $500 or have filed for eviction at their property within the past 90 days.

Media

The media is the way in which your advertising is being delivered. Some examples include billboards, television, radio, letters, postcards, t-shirts, websites, online advertising banners or novelty gifts.

Matching your media with your market is very important. If you are only advertising online and the people in your target market don?t have computers, it?s a problem. Be sure your media will present your offer to the largest number of potential customers.

Message

What do you want to say? The message is exactly what it sounds like. This is where you deliver your offer, make your pitch or start to close the deal. The message should target those people in your market and be written to appeal to the people you want to attract.

When writing your message, there are two simple rules that must be applied:

  1. There will always be an offer.
Example: I will pay your closing costs if you contact me before August 15.
  2. There will always be a call to action.
Example: Pick up the phone RIGHT NOW and call me at 800-555-1212.

Adam McKay Talks Anchorman 2

adam-mckay-will-ferrell-anchorman-2-sequel-slice

If you?re a fan of ?Adam McKay?s work (Anchorman, Step Brothers, Talladega Nights) and/or a fan of musical numbers, you should be pretty happy with this news. It sounds as if Anchorman 2 is going to feature at least one musical sequence with a bit more movement to it; no word yet on if any jazz flute will be featured. McKay also revealed a bit more about the plot of the sequel, which is set in the world of 24 hour news and will still probably not include a Ghost Rider cameo. The writer/director?is currently revising the script with star? Will Ferrell?and, though shooting is expected to start in March, there is no release date scheduled as of now. Hit the jump to see what McKay had to say.

will-ferrell-adam-mckay-01While doing interviews for his executive produced independent dark comedy Fully Loaded, McKay spilled a few quotes to The Playlist. It?s hard to believe, but it will be almost ten years since the original?film by the time?Anchorman 2?hits the screens. So what were McKay and the brain trust doing in the meantime (besides all of their other films)?

?We were going to do ?Anchorman 2? as a Broadway musical first, for like six months and then go shoot the movie. That was our initial idea.?

McKay elaborated?on this quote to suggest just how much music will find its way into?Anchorman 2:

?Whole song sequences, absolutely.?The music sequences we have done ? we did ?Afternoon Delight? [in 'Anchorman'],?Adam Scott?and his family singing ?Sweet Child O? Mine? [in 'Step Brothers'], we did a whole song for ?Talladega Nights? that got cut out, a big, big musical number ? we always do it live on the set. And my thing is, if the actors get freaked out, don?t sweat it, we can always re-record it later. And every time we?ve done it, we end up using the live track from the recording. We?ll probably do it the same way in this. This one might have a little more movement in it, and the only problem with that is the actors get winded.?

It?ll certainly be interesting to see how?Anchorman 2 handles its own little?Les Mis?moment, but few plot details have been released so far. McKay talks a bit more about the central conceit:

?Even thought it?s going to be a big silly movie, it?s all about the rise of the new media and 24 hour news cycle, and there?s a lot of interesting points to make about that while being silly.?

anchorman-2-sequel-image-will-ferrell

When asked if Ron Burgundy would have a Mr. Smith Goes to Washington?moment, he responded:

?It?s been discussed, there?s a little wisp of [talk]. We?d never do it straight ahead, we gotta fuck with it in some way. Because Ron Burgundy isn?t quite Jimmy Stewart in character, so if he does, he?s not going to do it well. But there?s a little bit of that going on. I mean what is this 24 hours news, and this wall of white noise information, has it really been good for our country? The great thing when you find a point of view like that is that it doesn?t have to be preachy or didactic, it?s also funny. It?s just funny that Americans have to contend with 2000 channels, and 60 different specific news sources, and the confusion that it creates, and the junk that we get to see is hilarious. That?s what we?re always kinda looking for, what?s the point of view that?s got life to it and plays.?

The original film was adored in part for its brief cameos (Vince Vaughn, Luke Wilson, Tim Robbins, Ben Stiller,?Jack Black, Seth Rogen and Danny Trejo). McKay made sure to stress that the supporting cast of day players for the sequel would be top talent as well:

?We?re talking about for ?Anchorman 2? creating a murderer?s row of the best day players ever. Like having every single one line or three line role, just be someone we just love. Someone like?Ian Roberts?or?Rob Huebel?or Paula Killen ? just making sure every day player is a homerun.?

How to Keep Your Barrel Horses Sane at the Gate | recreation and ...

People who know barrel horses know that they are of a volatile nature. Take them within smelling distance of an arena gate and they get switched on like somebody juiced a detonator. Most people are tolerant of this behavior, which they find normal for barrel horses. I disagree. Not only is this behaviour unsatisfactory, it can be outright dangerous.

There are plenty of instructors out there who are really good at training horses to become barrel racers. The issue is most of them are so obsessive about the technical aspects that they don't pay much heed to coaching the pony on behavior. Most of this training gives the pony the belief that once it is within the arena gate, it should really go hog wild. I don't know if you have had experience with this sort of pony, but if you have you'll know that It becomes well nigh impossible to control it once it is near an arena. This is potentially really threatening for the rider, the horse and for anyone that is unlucky enough to be nearby. I have seen people getting badly trampled as they were opening the gate to an uncontrollable pony.

Obviously, these horses can't claim to have been fully trained. They are still lacking a lot in social graces.

You can prevent this kind of issue with your own barrel horse. If he already has an issue , you can set about rectifying the situation. To begin with, never put your pony thru the pattern unless you happen to be at a rodeo. If your horse is well trained and knows the pattern intimately, you won't find it necessary to make him run every single time. As a matter of fact, unless you are resolving some issues with the pattern you or your pony or both of you have, you should not even be practicing the pattern much. If you happen to feel it necessary to run the barrels you should keep your horse to a walk or a trot to impress upon him it's not necessary for him to streak through every time. You may also try getting over to the start line and stopping there. Let your horse face the pattern quietly, then turn around and walk away. Don't fret if your horse fails to stand still the first time; he is going to learn soon enough. The basic idea is to get your pony to learn that he isn't to let his mind and body go into overdrive each time he sees a barrel pattern. Work gently on him with one or two basic commands like back up a little or give to the left or right. Make him focus on you. When you have his total attention, you can walk the pattern or you can walk away. Keep at this exercise until your horse learns to remain rock still at the barest of commands. Once your horse has become perfectly at home, repeat the exercises with him at some arena. Horses usually don't behave the same at home and at events, so exercise some patience and get him back into line the slow but sure way.

The ideal barrel horse is a thrumming dynamo that nonetheless never disobeys a command, no matter what the circumstances. He's the same whether he is at home or at an arena. You will find yourself with a much improved pony and a much improved barrel run performance if you're able to exert total control over your pony.

Storm survivors struggle with pets' fate

NEW YORK (AP) ? Kate and Warren Sherwood had to think quickly about what to take when Superstorm Sandy's surge flooded their barrier island and caused five houses on their block to burn to the ground. Luckily for their two black cats, Schwartz and Scooter, their pets were a priority.

But the narrow escape wasn't the end of the road for the felines. Their owners took refuge at a hotel that didn't accept cats.

"We sneaked them in and put a 'do not disturb' sign on the door ? pretending we're on our honeymoon," said Warren Sherwood, 56, a systems analyst. "But after three days, they got restless and starting meowing."

The couple ended up having to take them to a shelter set up in a gym near their hometown of Long Beach, N.Y.

Entwined with the human costs of the storm, which killed more than 100 people and caused billions of dollars in damage, is another significant toll ? that of the cherished pets that died or were left behind as families fled for their lives, adding in many cases to feelings of displacement and trauma.

Some find it hard to understand why animals are a key concern in disasters engulfing human lives, but owners feel an attachment and responsibility to their pets, said Niki Dawson, director of disaster services for the Humane Society of the United States.

"There's such a strong bond between people and animals that people will put their lives at risk not to leave a pet behind," Dawson said. "So they stay, even when they're told to evacuate, and that puts first responders going back for them at risk."

Owners have recounted tales of a dog swimming through flooded streets and extra food left behind for a tarantula no one was willing to take in.

In New York City and on Long Island, the ASPCA has rescued more than 300 animals and treated or provided supplies to about 13,000, working with government and private animal welfare agencies, said spokeswoman Emily Schneider.

City shelters took in about 400 animals along with their families in the first days after Sandy, Schneider said. There are now more than 100 in shelters with their owners, and a mobile animal medical clinic is cruising decimated neighborhoods in the Rockaway areas of Queens and on Staten Island.

In New Jersey, the Humane Society deployed dozens of first responders using mobile units and boats to bring in about 60 displaced animals each day on the barrier islands hit by the storm.

Two weeks after Sandy made landfall, followed a week later by a nor'easter, search-and-rescue teams were led by Animal Care & Control of NYC, a city-contracted nonprofit responding to hotline calls about pets in distress. Callers are owners forced to leave animals behind or unable to care for them, or people who see them wandering in hard-hit areas.

A Manhattan shelter takes in animals round the clock, hoping for owners to show up. And social media teams scour the Internet for reports of lost pets, helping reunite them with owners.

Rescuing animals is mandatory under federal law, which requires local and state governments to include plans for pets in emergency procedures. Federal Emergency Management Agency funds go toward the welfare of animals in disaster zones.

New York City's human shelters are required to accept pets, and so are taxis and public transportation.

More than 200 dogs, cats and other pets from a devastated area of Long Island are being sheltered in the gymnasium of a community college, set up by the North Shore Animal League America, the nation's largest no-kill rescue and adoption organization. Many, like the Sherwoods' Schwartz and Scooter, belong to owners in nearby shelters and hotels.

"We're ridiculously stressed out; we're freaked out," Warren Sherwood said. "But I'd do anything in the world for these people who are keeping our cats alive."

Also among the pets in the gym is Emma, a Manchester terrier who swam to safety through flooded streets in Freeport on Long Island, while its owners carried their cats above the water, plus some clothes they grabbed at the last minute.

"We lost our house. It's submerged," said Mark Swing, who fled with his girlfriend as the tides rose. "All we got out was our four cats and the dog, except for a few changes of clothes."

The 8-year-old terrier was "a little tired, but fine," said Swing, 48, a contractor who was in a Red Cross shelter.

Cats and dogs weren't the only pets rescued from the storms.

"We're finding chinchillas, guinea pigs, rabbits, reptiles, birds," Dawson said.

There are stories of pets whose fates remain unknown, like gerbils and a tarantula left behind by a teenage boy whose Staten Island home has been deemed uninhabitable.

His aunt in Brooklyn agreed to take in the gerbils, but no one wanted the hairy tarantula. The teen left it behind with lots of food ? in hopes the spider could be retrieved later.

Transport trailers distributed pet food and supplies like crates, leashes and litter from a warehouse in Queens set up days before Sandy descended, said the Humane Society's Schneider. Tons of food donated by manufacturers is being trucked in.

Celebrity chef Rachael Ray is donating $500,000 to the ASPCA to help pets and families struggling to rebound from Sandy. She said her pet food brand, Nutrish, is also shipping 4 tons of wet and dry dog food for Sandy animals, and her Yum-o organization is donating $100,000 to City Harvest and the Food Bank for New York City.

The ASPCA will use the money to lease a building to board Sandy animals until their owners can take care of them.

It will likely be months before any estimates are available as to how many pets might have died or were lost during New York's double storms. And like their owners, many animals that survived won't go home anytime soon.

Dawson said she has seen people stuck in shelters, wearing donated clothing, with no idea when they'll go home. But when they turn to their dog or cat, "their faces light up."

And that, she says, is why animals matter amid a human disaster.

Carl Jung Depth Psychology: How many will God break?

I must say this, not with reference to the opinions of the ancients or this or that authority; but because I have experienced it. It has happened thus in me. And it certainly happened in a way that I neither expected nor wished for. The experience of the God in this form was unexpected and unwanted. I wish I could say it was a deception and only too willingly would I disown this experience. But I cannot deny that it has seized me beyond all measure and steadily goes on working in me. So if it is a deception, then deception is my God. Moreover, the God is in the deception.

And if this were already the greatest bitterness that could happen to me, I would have to confess to this experience and recognize the God in it. No insight or objection is so strong that it could surpass the strength of this experience. And even if the God had revealed himself in a meaningless abomination, I could only avow that I have experienced the God in it. I even know that it is not too difficult to cite a theory that would sufficiently explain my experience and join it to the already known. I could furnish this theory myself and be satisfied in intellectual terms, and yet this theory would be unable to remove even the smallest part of the knowledge that I have experienced the God. I recognize the God by the unshakeableness of the experience. I cannot help but recognize him by the experience. I do not want to believe it, I do not need to believe it, nor could I believe it. How can one believe such? My mind would need to be totally confused to believe such things. Given their nature, they are most improbable.

Not only improbable but also impossible for our understanding. Only a sick brain could produce such deceptions. I am like those sick persons who have been overcome by delusion and sensory deception. But I must say that the God makes us sick. I experience the God in sickness. A living God afflicts our reason like a sickness. He fills the soul with intoxication. He fills us with reeling chaos. How many will the God break? ~Carl Jung; Red Book

NIH funds tissue engineering project at Rice University to test peptide hydrogels, starting with teeth

Smart scaffolding that can guide cells, proteins and small-molecule drugs to make new tissue and repair damage inside the body is in the works at Rice University.

Scientists at Rice and the Texas A&M Health Science Center Baylor College of Dentistry received a $1.7 million, five-year grantfrom the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to develop a hydrogel that can be injected into a patient to form an active biological scaffold.

Rice bioengineer Jeffrey Hartgerink and co-investigator Rena D'Souza of Baylor won the grant to continue their groundbreaking work on self-assembling, multidomain peptide hydrogels that not only physically support but alsoencourage the growth of specific kinds of tissues.

Bioengineers use scaffolds to mimic the body's extracellular matrix, which supports the growth and maintenance of living cells. Synthetic scaffolds are used as frameworks to form replacement tissues and, perhaps someday, regenerate entire organs from a patient's own cells. Once their work is done, the scaffolds are designed to degrade and leave only natural, healthy tissue behind.

While much of the work to date has focused on creatingtissue in the laboratory for implantation, Hartgerink's aim is to inject scaffolds infused with living cells that will allow the repairs to happen inside the tissue's natural environment.

The peptides designed and prepared at Rice self-assemble into nanofibers that can be triggered to form a hydrogel. "We can then deliver cells, small-molecule drugs and proteins to bring everything together properly in one place," said Hartgerink, an associate professor of chemistry and of bioengineering at Rice. Hydrogels could be designed to interact with stem cells and "get them to do what we want them to do," he said.

Hartgerink and D'Souza, a professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at Baylor currently on aworking sabbatical at Rice's BioScience Research Collaborative, have been pursuing the project for five years. The NIH grant will allow them to focus on the regeneration of the dentin-pulp complex found inside every tooth. The pulp, D'Souza said, is the soft tissue in the roots and crown that keeps the tooth vital and responsive to injury. "If you have a toothache, it's the tissue that's inflamed and has no place to expand. That's why it hurts so much," she said.

Currently, dentists remove inflamed pulp and replace it with an inert rubber-based filler, she said. But injecting stem cell-seeded hydrogels would allow natural pulp to regenerateinto the chamber while stimulating new dentin formation. "Hydrogels have key advantages," D'Souza said. "We can deliver them in a syringe to small spaces that are difficult to access, and the material does not get damaged. Developing this material as a restorative therapy is advantageous to patients as, unlike all other dental materials, this one is biologically active."

The researchers reached a milestone in 2010 when they found a way to have the fibers degrade rather than stay in the body. With the new grant, they hope to start trials of their dental hydrogel within two years, D'Souza said. "I can see potential applications for hydrogel, for example, for spinal cord regeneration or for various eye conditions, where we can restore the vitreous humour," she said.

Hartgerink is glad to have the NIH on board, but noted the grant would not have been possible without initial support from the Welch Foundation. "I've had Welch funding since the day I got here, and it has allowed me to do the preliminary work for all the grants we ended up getting," he said. "It's good to have them in Texas."

D'Souza said the seed grant money provided by the International Association for Dental Research in collaboration with GlaxoSmithKline enabled her laboratory to perform proof-of-concept stem cell experiments. "This is a great example of the huge benefits of interdisciplinary collaboration where, by combining expertise, we can push the frontiers of translational and clinical research forward."

Why Steve Jobs Was Wrong About the iPad Mini ... - Yahoo! Finance

Follow The Daily Ticker on Facebook!

An interesting thing has happened in the days since Apple (AAPL) released its new smaller iPad:

Many Apple devotees have said it will become THE iPad, at least in their own personal use.

Why?

Mainly because of weight and size.

Once you've held the new iPad Mini, the full-size iPad feels like a brick.

Related: Apple's New iPad Mini Is Pricey But That Won't Deter Fans: TechCrunch's John Biggs

Apple analyst John Gruber says the Mini has become his main iPad. Apple analyst Dan Frommer thinks Mini sales will soon surpass full-size iPad sales and become Apple's second-best selling gadget after the iPhone. Seamus Bellamy and Brian Lam at Wirecutter say the iPad Mini is "the best tablet and way better than the full-sized iPad for nearly everyone."

All this despite a relatively low-resolution screen that has disappointed most Apple fans.

(I'm a happy Apple customer, if not a fanatic, and I think the screen looks great. But I'm still using an older iPhone, so I haven't been spoiled by the "retina" resolution screen that Apple uses on its new iPads and iPhones yet. And the weight and size of the new iPad really is great.)

Related: Forget The iPhone 5 ? Apple Is About To Start Production Of The iPhone 5S

Given the lower price-point of the new iPad Mini, which should get considerably cheaper over the next couple of years, it seems likely that the Mini might, in fact, fulfill the initial promise of the iPad, which was to have low-priced tablets all over the house. A tablet for each person in the family. Tablets for guests. Tablets in the kitchen. A tablet in the bathroom. Apple's Mini is still too expensive for that to happen, but the prices of other tablets are now hitting levels where it could quickly become a reality.

Related: Here's A New Report On Why Apple Decided To Overcharge For The iPad Mini

And all this is ironic, given the initial appraisal of Apple founder and CEO Steve Jobs of smaller tablets.

Back in 2010, Jobs famously dissed smaller tablets and said that Apple would not make one. He pronounced the smaller tablets "DOA--dead on arrival," and explained that the screen-size was just too small to create a good app experience.

(Apple recently said that Jobs was just dissing 7-inch tablets, while the iPad Mini is slightly larger, but as the transcript shows, the slam was aimed at all tablets smaller than 10 inches).

Jobs' rant about smaller tablets was a classic (read it here), and he was certainly right that the first "avalanche" of competitors to the iPad would flop.

But it's becoming clear that Jobs was dead wrong about the potential for smaller tablets, as the reactions of Apple fans who have bought the Mini make clear.

In fact, if normal folks view the Mini the way early adopters do, it seems possible that the full-sized iPad could soon come to seem like a huge, lumbering dinosaur--the same way the MacBook Pros and iMacs of several years ago seem relative to the versions that have just been released.

Of course, Steve Jobs was known to change his mind from time to time. And he was also known to go on awesome hyperbolic rants about the pathetic lameness of the competition. So his famous 2010 dissing of smaller tablets may have been driven primarily by the latter desire rather than an actual belief that all smaller tablets would be DOA.

Either way, if the early read is clear, Apple's next mega-hit product may be one that Jobs publicly bodyslammed two years ago.

By the way, if the iPad Mini does become "The iPad," what wlll that mean for Apple's business?

Related: iPad Mini: Will It Cannibalize Apple's Regular iPad Sales?

Initially, anyway, it might mean a modest hit to revenue growth.

Apple's full-sized iPad is now a $40 billion business. It seems unlikely that normal Apple users are likely to buy BOTH a full-sized iPad AND an iPad Mini. Rather, they'll likely choose one of the two. And based on the initial reaction, the choice for most is likely to be the iPad Mini. iPad Minis will likely have an average price-point that is about $200 less than the full-sized iPad. So, on a per unit basis, Apple's revenue will take a hit.

But this loss of revenue on a unit basis will likely be at least partially offset by some additional sales--especially next year, if Apple releases an upgraded version of the Mini and the current version gets cheaper. This could help increase the velocity of iPad sales, even though revenue per-unit decreases.

Related: Nothing Lasts Forever: Apple Is Showing Its Age

The iPad Mini will also likely have a smaller gross profit contribution margin than the full-sized iPad. So, especially initially, Mini cannibalization could put pressure on Apple's profit margin. As with revenue, this margin pressure should be offset by additional margin dollars.

But if the iPad Mini becomes the main iPad, it seems reasonable to conclude that this will put more pressure on Apple's overall profit margin.

Another irony here is that, two years after the launch of the original iPad, Microsoft (MSFT) has finally scrambled to produce a well-reviewed tablet of its own--the Surface. But the Surface is a bigger tablet. It will be frustrating for Microsoft, to say the least, if the company has finally made a strong entrance into the tablet market only to have bigger tablets quickly rendered obsolete.
