Several Ideas on How to Select Decorative Tiles to Beautify Your ...

From antiquated temples to traditional frameworks, tiles have a long history of gracing the interiors of homes to improve the look of ceilings, walls, and floors. If you're looking to enhance your kitchen area or washroom with classy Calacatta gold mosaic tiles, for instance, it's a really good idea to incorporate that in your plan and spending plan. The following are some ideas to help you select the right ornamental tiles for your residence.

Establish your intention.

Different sorts of tiles can be set up in various areas in your home like in the walls, flooring, and counters. Choose your tiles appropriate for your purpose. For instance, long lasting and non-slip tile material like stone is optimal for outdoor use, such as in pools and patios.

Decide between DIY and hiring a professional.

Putting in tiles can either be a do-it-yourself or "leave-it-to-the-experts" kind of project. If you think you can quickly follow directions from handbooks or have the required skills to cut and lay tiles, DIY can both be fulfilling and cost-effective. However, if you have neither the persistence nor the ability, there are several specialists that you can choose to do the job for you.

Pick the right design to complement your home.

There are many kinds and styles of tiles available in the market. Select a design that emphasizes the fine points of the room, but keep in mind to stay within the spending plan. If you find it tough to choose, consult a restoration expert or do a fast research online or through journals.

Opt for systematic and smooth tiles.

Take note that though you're getting Calacatta gold mosaic tiles straight from a manufacturer, you still have to make certain that their sizes are consistent. Uniform tiles offer a more well balanced ambiance to a space. Whereas, placing tiles that extremely differ in size gives a messy and disorganized appearance.

If you're imagining fine Calacatta gold marble tile suggested by home remodelers, thinking about these techniques will certainly be valuable. You get the tile you want that is ensured to be practical, resilient, and beautiful. For more strategies and info, you can check out voices.yahoo.com/types-tile-flooring-choose-right-8018954.html.

AP Exclusive: Nigeria secret police details leaked

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) ? Personnel records of former and current members of Nigeria's top domestic spy agency, including home addresses and names of immediate family members, leaked onto the Internet in a threatening message that claimed to come from a radical Islamist sect that's killed hundreds of people this year alone, The Associated Press has learned.

The leak of personal data of more than 60 past and current employees of Nigeria's State Security Service remained easily accessible on the Internet for days and had details about the agency's director-general, including his mobile phone number, bank account particulars and contact information for his son.

Many of agents listed who could be reached by the AP said they received no official warning from the spy agency that their information had been posted online nor been otherwise alerted. The material has been deleted from the comment section of a website, but the security breach astonished spy service veterans and calls into question whether Nigeria's intelligence community, whose agents already have released suspected terrorists out of religious and ethnic sympathies, are too compromised from within to stop the violence now plaguing Africa's most populous nation.

A senior Nigerian intelligence official said authorities were aware that the leak had happened and that many were embarrassed by it. He spoke on condition of anonymity as information about the leak was not to have been made public.

Marilyn Ogar, a spokeswoman for the State Security Service, declined to answer questions Thursday about the posting of the information.

The State Security Service, created in 1986 by then-military ruler Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, monitors domestic dissent in Nigeria, an oil-rich nation of more than 160 million people. Though geared toward stopping terrorism and destabilizing coups, the agency routinely faces criticism for targeting government critics. In Abuja, Nigeria's capital, the agency operates out of cars made to look like the many green taxis that roam the streets. Plain-clothed agents of the service routinely question foreign journalists at airports, border crossings and on city streets if they see reporters conducting interviews. Agents carrying assault rifles often guard major events in the country.

Many agents for the typically secretive agency are preoccupied with concealing their identities, as most try to blend unnoticed into society.

The information leak came in two postings earlier this month on a website that provides rewritten news on Nigeria. The first posting threatened to kill agents of the State Security Service on behalf of Boko Haram, a radical Islamist sect responsible for more than 660 killings this year alone in Nigeria. The second posting simply offered a block of text containing biographical and other details about the agents.

Though the comments have been removed, the AP is not identifying the website involved as cached versions of the comments remain online and intelligence service agents have been killed by Boko Haram members in the past.

The list includes former and current agents across the country, including Director-General Ekpeyong Ita. Those reached by the AP who were willing to talk expressed disbelief that sensitive information like that could make its way to the Internet.

"I was shocked to see my details posted on the Internet," said one former agent, who declined to be named out of safety concerns. "I've not heard anything from anybody. I was surprised that such information could be leaked."

Another man on the list said he simply once served as a doctor to help the agency on an on-call basis only. The list appeared to include lower-ranking agents, as well as one-time state directors for the agency.

Some of those contacted suggested that the list appeared to come from the agency's pension department, as it mostly included retirees and listed bank account information for nearly all those named. It was not immediately clear if the information had been hacked from the outside and obtained or taken out by an agency employee or someone with access to the material.

The release of the information comes as Nigeria's intelligence agencies have made a series of blunders in trying to fight Boko Haram in Africa's most populous country, with some likely influenced by ethnic or religious sentiments. Intelligence agencies allegedly released a suspected Islamic radical in 2007 who later masterminded Boko Haram's suicide car bombing of the U.N. headquarters in August 2011 that killed at least 25 people and wounded more than 100 others, officials previously told the AP. A leaked U.S. diplomatic cable also show U.S. officials complained in 2008 about Nigeria's government quietly releasing other suspects into the custody of Islamic leaders as part of a program it called "Perception Management."

Another U.S. diplomatic cable complains that State Security Service agents nearly let a suspected bomb maker trained by the Somali terror group al-Shabab onto an international flight, despite an Interpol notice for his arrest. The agents who allegedly tried to release Mohamed Ibrahim Ahmed "not only knew about the Interpol notice, but simply said they did not want to hold him any longer," the February 2010 cable read.

Ahmed, an Eritrean, pleaded guilty to charges in June in a U.S. federal court that he supported terrorism by associating with al-Shabab, a terror group with links to al-Qaida. He faces up to 10 years in prison.

Most of those on the leaked list of agents reached by the AP said no one from the federal government or the spy agency warned them that their personnel information had appeared on the Internet. Instead, colleagues and other former agents called each other to spread the news and later contacted the State Security Service themselves to report the breach.

It is unclear if the person who posted the information online really does have ties to Boko Haram, which has targeted security officials in the past. Violence has been centered mostly in the country's Muslim north. One retired agent who spoke to AP said he was grateful he lives in the largely Christian south, away from the sect's attacks.

"It's worrying that they have access to that," the agent said. "Those living in Abuja (and the north) are the ones who should living in fear."

From smart to genius: will design define the future of gadgets?

4 hrs.

In a pre-iPhone age, mobile phones came in all shapes and sizes. Remember the clamshell, candy bar, swivel, backflip, slider, dual-slider, lipstick, and, of course, the taco? Nowadays, most phones have a touch screen, rows of icons and are rectangular.

In short, they all look a lot like the iPhone.

Now, in the wake of the Apple Inc vs Samsung Electronics trial, where the U.S. firm won what the South Koreans scathingly called a "monopoly over rectangles with rounded corners," the fear is that an era of rapid and exciting innovation in mobile design is over. The iPhone has won the day and all those whose handsets use Google's Android operating system, the argument goes, will either give up or tread carefully for fear of litigation.

But others argue the opposite.

Paul Pugh, creative vice president at frog, a San Francisco-based design company owned by India's Aricent Group, believes companies may now unshackle their designers to come up with genre-busting form factors and user interfaces that breathe fresh life into the industry.

"We don't know yet how far the impacts are going to go from here," says Pugh. "I do hope it's an inspiration moment for the Android platform and the manufacturers to put their bets on innovation ... to come with great user experience based on users' needs, and not stagnate based on the patents crippling them."

Smartpad
Frog knows how hard this is to bring to market. Take the SmartPad; a prototype Android phone the company unveiled last year that at first glance looked, in the words of one reviewer on the technology website Engadget, like "yet another plain smartphone - dark, nondescript, and maybe a little like an iPhone 4 that's had its right-most extent sliced off."

Flip open the two layers, however, and you had a phone with twice the normal screen size. "Suddenly it's a little tablet, two screens forming a 6-inch slate," the Engadget reviewer wrote.

The prototype, which belonged to Imerj, part of Singapore-listed contract manufacturer Flextronics International, intrigued: The Engadget article attracted more than 400 comments. It wasn't a wholly new concept, but the design was impressive, including the software, which included apps that made the most of the extra screen. Imerj promised a kit for software developers, and a team worked on a slew of apps that made use of the innovative dual screen. They dreamed big: to take on Research in Motion's BlackBerry.

"We had an idea that the smartphone was going to be the primary computing platform for most people going forward," recalled Brett Faulk, then Imerj's vice president of marketing. "However, it has two challenges: small screen and small keyboard. So the concept was to create a product that scales as my productivity needs increase."

After a few months, however, everything went quiet. Imerj's Twitter account went dead, as did its website. Both are now offline. Faulk and others left the company. Flextronics declined to comment, as did frog's Pugh.

A former member of the Imerj team said the project was deliberately aimed at a niche far from Apple's consumer-driven world, but that was part of the reason for its demise.

Building a device and the suite of office applications to go with it required at least five years gestation, an investment the parent company in the end couldn't make. "We were very ahead," said the person, who was not authorized to speak about the project and declined to be identified. "We were very sad to see innovation being pushed aside."

Limited room
At issue now is whether the Apple vs. Samsung verdict might upend such conservative calculations.

It may already be happening: The latest addition to Samsung's Galaxy range of devices - at the centre of the court case - is a camera with a display that looks, feels and acts like an Android smartphone, including WiFi and 3G connections. And Samsung itself has a patent on a dual screen device, according to patent blog patentbolt.com, that looks a lot like the SmartPad.

But there are limits to what can be done with hardware.

"There was a lot of ingenuity about the mechanical configuration of designing buttons and cameras and exposing these particular features," said Horace Dediu, a former Nokia engineer who now runs a consultancy and influential blog called Asymco. With the rise of the iPhone "all that went away when you have a clean glass display with touch interface."

The problem he says, is that the operating systems available to device makers - Android and, to a lesser extent, Microsoft's Windows Phone - are designed for that shape.

So, if there is going to be a change in what a phone looks like, Google needs to be the one to change. "Theoretically, if Google thinks that this isn't a winning game for them they may go to the manufacturers and say OK, we're going to allow you to have mechanical differentiation," said Dediu.

Until that happens, manufacturers have limited room to move. They can toy with the specifications and proportions of the device - Samsung has had a surprise hit with its outsized Galaxy Note, the second version of which was unveiled on Thursday - or by tweaking the Android operating system itself.

Indeed, frog's most visible success in smartphone design has been a user interface that Sharp Corp recently launched for its Android phones in Japan. Sharp, said Pugh, was looking to maintain its market lead as Japan shifts from older feature phones to smartphones, and gave frog a broad remit to come up with something to make their Android devices stand out.

The so-called 'Fresh UI' software adds an extra layer, or skin, to Google's basic operating system, which Pugh says improves access to the most used features on a device.

Skins and forks
Indeed, such skins are an increasingly popular way for handset makers to differentiate their devices from those of competitors. Huawei on Thursday unveiled its own 'Emotion UI' skin which it said will give consumers "one more reason to choose a Huawei smartphone over another brand's." It's not just for the big boys: Meizu, a small Chinese smartphone maker, has gained a cult following with its quirky customization of Android that once earned the ire of Steve Jobs, but is now fending off its own copycats.

But taking this route is not without its problems.

For one thing, skins are usually just that: a surface layer that users either love or hate, and which quickly peels away to the standard Android interface that is little different whether the device costs $500 or $50. And while the goal is to differentiate, they can end up pushing the Android interface into more closely resembling Apple's own iOS. Indeed, Apple presented slides at the trial alleging that Samsung's tweaks to the home screen on 13 devices made it mimic that of the iPhone. The jury agreed.

Some makers have already taken note. Meizu, the Chinese manufacturer, was happy when the home screen of one of its models was cited in court by Apple as an example of not infringing on its design patents, but the Chinese firm has nevertheless "modified some aspects of our user experience" for future products, according to the Zhuhai-based company's product director Yang Yan.

Still, in the longer run innovation needs to go beyond mere tweaking, argues Brandon Edwards, Shanghai-based colleague of Pugh. He believes more manufacturers will follow Amazon's path of taking Android in their own direction with the Kindle Fire, effectively parting company with Google.

Such so-called forks are likely to appeal to device makers beyond phones, Edwards says. Clients have been talking to frog about embedding technology into smart systems, cars and healthcare, and those devices could well be running Android.

Design value
Innovation in smartphones, meanwhile, is likely to move beyond form factor and apps to how they interact with their surroundings, says Pugh. Expect to see smartphones better controlled by voice and gesture, moving beyond the restriction of the device's shape and touchscreen in the next year or so.

The most significant outcome of the Apple Samsung spat, however, may be that design is no longer merely an afterthought.

There may have been a lot of different shaped devices in the pre-iPhone world, but that doesn't mean they offered consumers a better user experience, says Pugh. "All this confirms that there is a monetary value to design," he says.

"In the past, they were competing on speed and the technology base itself. Those things are now relatively normalized and design is really defining the device and the device experience."

Ultimate Fighter cast includes a former TUF coach and plenty of drama between Dana White and Roy Nelson

Nearly every season since the UFC created the reality series 'The Ultimate Fighter,' UFC president Dana White raves about the bouts and promises it will be the "best season ever." That's the promoter in him.

But as the 15th season is about to begin, White's focus is slightly different. The series, now known as 'The Ultimate Fighter Fridays,' seems to be as much about the battle between White and coach Roy Nelson as it is about the fighters or Nelson's upcoming fight with opposing coach Shane Carwin.

The series will return to the taped format on Sept. 14 with a two-hour special that will include all 16 fights to get into the house. The season features welterweight fighters, including Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt Cameron Diffley, who served as the jiu jitsu instructor when Forrest Griffin was the coach.

There have been plenty of times a fighter has fought on the show and then coached, but this might be the first time a man coached and then showed up as the contestant.

But the big news seems to be about the battles between White and the outspoken Nelson, the winner of Season 10.

"Carwin and Nelson are two guys who just can't stand each other and Roy and I haven't exactly seen eye to eye either," White said in a statement. "He's been a nightmare for me to work with on this show with all of his stupid b.s."

Nelson kicked things off in an interview with MMA Junkie in which he publicly blasted White. That is big news in and of itself, since so few of the UFC fighters are willing to take White on publicly.

Nelson, though, had no such qualms. He tore into White in an interview with MMA Junkie's Steven Marrocco.

It's probably because he wants to be a fighter, and he's not

Nelson continued to poke at White, painting himself as a guy looking to carry the sport to the next level.

I'm always at the back of the bus when it comes to the UFC. I'm just trying to further MMA to the next level, hold journalism up to higher standards, holding fights to higher standards, holding promotions to higher standards, holding athletic commissions to higher standards, and even holding the fans to higher standards.

White responded to Nelson following the UFC on Fox 4 card in Los Angeles, telling MMA Fighting's Ariel Helwani that Nelson "is a huge pain in the [expletive]."

The dynamic between White and Nelson may wind up being the highlight of the season.

The 32 fighters who will compete on Sept. 14 for the 16 slots in the house and the chance at the UFC contract are:

Season 2 NA Regionals - Blog - SoloMid.NET - League of Legends ...

S2 NA Regional Predictions

by Pingmeep @ August 29, 2012
5423 Views

Today is the start of the Season 2 NA Regionals at PAX Prime in Seattle Washington. With a $150,000USD prize pool, and the chance of a salaried eSports career in the Season 3 Championship Series every team wants to place in the top 3. Here's a quick overview of the first round matches and some of the picks. First round matches are Bo3 and single elimination.

STREAM

Team Curse vs TSM Evo
Aug 30, 11AM PDT/2PM EDT/8PM CEST

Pingmeep:
Curse has been outperforming Evo on LAN events as of late. I hate betting against Nhat and Co. but aside from cheese and counter cheese I just can't see a way for Evo to make it through.

LightBlind:
Curse > Evo: playing much better than Evo lately.

AttackFang:
Curse has been performing at the last LAN events, and have been a top 3-4 team since they got their gaming house/apartment.

DigiWombat:
Evo has been extremely quiet in the past few weeks, but the loss of Aphromoo gives me deep concerns about their ability to perform against Curse who has been picking up a lot of steam lately.

MalfusX
Curse has the hot hand coming off some impressive games in Raleigh where they swore they were still holding back. Evo has been a crowd pleaser for some time, but the loss of their nhatphromoo bottom lane is likely to cause them problems against Cop and Elementz. 2-0 to Curse

Team SoloMid vs Monomaniac Ferus
Aug 30, 2PM PDT/5PM EDT/11PM CEST

Pingmeep:
On paper this is supposed to be the easiest match to call. TSM is top seed in NA and mMe.ferus (formerly mTw.NA) barely squeaked by with a winning tiebreaker vs Orbit Gaming at MLG over the weekend. Still to me this feels like either a clean sweep or upset waiting to happen.

LightBlind: TSM > mMe ferus: TSM at LAN is beast.

AttackFang:
TSM > Ferus. Ferus is really strong, but TSM has been practicing for weeks. I expect something new to come out from them.

DigiWombat:
TSM. Ferus has a solid chance at pulling a win out, but there's some sort of tournament magic that TSM pulls out of their pants to just straight up win tournaments. Pants magic.

MalfusX:
Ferus has been firing on all cylinders since the addition of Aphromoo to their lineup, but they're going head to head with one of the most accomplished and storied teams in the game's history. TSM comes into this event fresh, sharp and hungry after their decision not to participate in MLG Raleigh and they'll be out for blood and the $40k top prize. 2-1 to TSM

Team Dignitas vs Team Dynamic
Aug 31, 11AM PDT/2PM EDT/8PM CEST

Pingmeep:
Perhaps the closest match-up. Dignitas may have held back against Dynamic before but few teams can see through cheese like TD and make it to a point where they can win. 2-1 for Team Dignitas but some of the toughest matches of the first round.

LightBlind:
Dig > TD: Close match, Dig have had trouble with TD before but they will have strats prepared so should win.

AttackFang:
TD > Dig. I'm going out on a limb on this one. Dynamic has looked a LOT better since they reestablished the lineup they had at IPL4.

DigiWombat:
I think Dig still has this. TD has never been a consistent tournament team and their live tourney play is pretty all over the place. Dig, on the other hand, consistently plays well and basically walked over the field at Raleigh and they gave up a game to TD, but eh. EH.

MalfusX:
Dignitas come from Raleigh into the regionals with a pair of wins over Dynamic and a lot to prove after the controversy surrounding the grand finals. Dignitas also claim to have a few nasty surprises for their opponents, expect to see them come out swinging against the youngsters. 2-0 to Dig

Counter Logic Gaming Prime vs Team Legion
Aug 31, 2PM PDT/5PM EDT/11PM CEST

Pingmeep:
CLG.Prime has been to Korea and has played against and scrimmed some of the best teams in that region. With the depth of experience and finally competing in NA with their full roster they should take out LgN. CLG's rushed departure out of Korea to avoid Typhoon Bolaven may have shaved some of the most precious practice time. If they didn't do their homework LgN could surprise them for a game and maybe the series. Still I'm betting that CLG will try to use the conventional wisdom to take out Lautemortis with a jungle invade at 1:55 and keep the advantage with better mechanics.

LightBlind:
CLG > LgN: Korea practice OP

AttackFang:
CLG > LGN. Jiji is king.

DigiWombat:
LGN at this point is an also-ran. They were streaky at best in their original incarnation as RFLX and they have failed to produce anything significant in recent months to make anyone things CLG could be toppled. BUT HEY! Surprises are always fun.

MalfusX:
Legion put their mark on the community with an outstanding performance at IPL Face Off in San Francisco. If there is a matchup that could see a huge upset, this might be the one. CLG's success in this tournament will be dependent on their bottom lane: they will live or die by Doublelift's performance. One more thing to remember going into the regionals: CLG have not won a top-tier tournament since MLG Raleigh 2011. 2-1 to CLG

That's what we think, now it's your turn to make your prediction with a comment below.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Victoria Azarenka looks quite comfortable so far on the hard courts at Flushing Meadows.

She's the world's top-ranked player and the Australian Open champ, but Azarenka has never advanced past the fourth round at the U.S. Open.

No hint of her past struggles in her first two matches this year, though. Azarenka beat qualifier Kirsten Flipkens 6-2, 6-2 in 65 minutes in the second round Wednesday.

"I don't feel like I have to prove something," Azarenka said.

She hasn't made it beyond the third round as a top-10 seed in each of the last three years. In 2010, she collapsed on court after hitting her head before her second-round match. Last year, seeded fourth, she had the bad luck of drawing 28th-seeded Serena Williams in the third.

"The next match is going to be the usual match for me. I don't have anything that, you know, it's the third round or I have to win that I didn't the last two years," Azarenka said.

So far in 2012, she's lost just five games through her first two matches. Next up is 28th-seeded Zheng Jie of China, who beat Magdalena Rybarikova 6-3, 6-1.

It was another quick, predictable result in a tournament with few upsets or even nail-biters yet.

David Ferrer opened his tournament with a result befitting a top-four seed. Ranked fifth, Ferrer moved up a spot because fellow Spaniard Rafael Nadal is out with knee problems. Ferrer beat 34th-ranked Kevin Anderson of South Africa 6-4, 6-2, 7-6 (3).

It was potentially a tough first-round matchup for Ferrer: Anderson made the third round at Flushing Meadows each of the last two years. But Ferrer was in control throughout, facing just three break points ? all in the third set ? and saving all of them.

"It was not easy match, no, with Anderson," Ferrer said. "He's a really good player. He's very strong first and second serve. I'm happy."

One surprise Wednesday: American wild card Mallory Burdette is through to the third round in her Grand Slam debut.

The 252nd-ranked Stanford All-American beat No. 69 Lucie Hradecka 6-2, 6-4. A 21-year-old from Georgia, Burdette was this year's NCAA singles runner-up to teammate Nicole Gibbs.

She figured that loss cost her the only chance of making the Open, but she got in as the American woman who earned the most points on the USTA Pro Circuit this summer. Now her next opponent could be Maria Sharapova.

"To end up here at the US Open was a huge surprise," she said. "I never expected that at the beginning of the summer."

In other women's second-round matches, 15th-seeded Lucie Safarova beat Aleksandra Wozniak 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, and 19th-seeded Nadia Petrova defeated Simona Halep 6-1, 6-1.

Other top players on the court later Wednesday include the third-seeded Sharapova and Andy Murray, along with three-time champ Kim Clijsters and top American John Isner.

Beneath Antarctic ice, a potent greenhouse gas?

A study published Wednesday suggests that the Antarctic Ice Sheet holds vast amounts of methane, which, if released during a thaw, could accelerate global warming.??

Large volumes of the greenhouse gas methane could have been produced under the Antarctic Ice Sheet over millions of years, which could add to global warming if released into the atmosphere by a thaw, a study said on Wednesday.

Scientists from the universities of Bristol, Utrecht, California and Alberta simulated the accumulation of methane in Antarctic sedimentary basins using models and calculations.

They found it was likely there were micro-organisms there that would have been able to convert the ice sheet's large deposits of organic carbon into the potent gas.

If present, methane would most likely be trapped under the ice.

But it could be released into the atmosphere as rising global temperatures melt the ice sheet, fuelling even more global warming, the scientists said in the paper published in the journal Nature.

"The Antarctic Ice Sheet could constitute a previously neglected component of the global methane hydrate inventory although significant uncertainty exists," the scientists said.

Methane stays in the atmosphere for up to 15 years. Levels have been on the rise over the past few years, following a period of stability since 1998.

The gas is normally trapped as "methane hydrate" in sediments under a seabed. Methane hydrate is a form of water ice containing a large amount of methane which is usually stable.

As temperatures rise, the hydrate breaks down and methane is released from the sea bed, mostly dissolving into the seawater.

But if trapped methane broke sea surfaces and escaped into the atmosphere, it would intensify global warming.

Scientists have already identified thousands of sites in the Arctic where methane is bubbling into the atmosphere but the potential for methane formation under the Antarctic Ice Sheet has been less well studied.

Conditions under the Antarctic Ice Sheet seem capable of producing methane as the water is oxygen-depleted, hosts micro-organisms and contains significant reservoirs of organic carbon, Wednesday's study said.

"We calculate that the sub-Antarctic hydrate inventory could be of the same order of magnitude as that of recent estimates made for Arctic permafrost."

In 2008, American and Russian experts estimated that 0.5 megatonnes of methane are released per year and at least 1,400 gigatonnes of carbon is trapped as methane and methane hydrates under the Arctic permafrost.

But up to 50 gigatonnes of hydrate storage could be released at any time, which would increase the methane content of the Earth's atmosphere by a factor of 12, they warned.

Measures small businesses can take to reduce ... - Personal Finance

Businesses of any size often have the means to reduce their impact on the environment, and there are many measures and ideas that they can take on board to not only be a greener business, but save money too.

The first measure, which is perhaps the simplest, is to increase the amount of recycling which takes place around the office. Just as many people do in their households, designating a specific bin especially for recyclables, can reduce the carbon footprint of the whole business, and make it greener. Another alternative for recycling your waste paper is to reuse it. Any scrap paper which needn?t be shredded can be used again for phone messages, note paper or anything else which may prove convenient. Dependent upon what the business is, re-using various packaging, paper and envelopes will save buying more, and have a benefit on the environment as more won?t need to be bought.

Another highly simple and straightforward measure to save energy and reduce impact on the environment is to switch lights and plugs off when they aren?t being used. Although a very obvious idea, which is often ignored, ensures that all lights are switched off and computers and other technology are also turned off (not just on standby!) By doing so, you save energy, but also save money!

Swapping light bulbs to energy saving bulbs will really pay off for small businesses, as there are likely to be quite a few lights that are in constant or intermittent use. Ensuring that outside lights, which may sometimes be constantly left on, are set on timers and fitted with sensors. This means that the lights are only on when someone is in the vicinity of the building, and only at certain times. Energy, and therefore money is saved, and the money that would have been spent can be reinvested into a different, more worthwhile area of the business.

Offices obviously use a large amount of energy, and so it would be worthwhile looking at, and switching to a greener business gas and electricity provider. This means that their providers have a more sustainable and greener method of supplying your energy, meaning smaller carbon footprints all around!

Energy Management Software is another useful tool which can reduce a business?s impact on the environment. This includes several energy-related software applications and programmes which can provide help and support regarding energy-saving measures. Such applications include utility bill tracking, carbon and sustainability reporting, IT equipment management, energy audits and utility bill tracking. This allows businesses to keep an eye on their energy-expenditures, and to monitor their impact on the environment.

There are so many things that we can do to lessen our impact on the environment, even if you?re a busy small business. It?s the small things which make a difference, and these small things needn?t be lots of effort, difficult or even expensive. By thinking a bit more about the things which can be done to save energy and money, small businesses can decrease the impact they have on the environment quicker and more easily than they thought.

James writes for PowerExperts.co.uk, a forward thinking business energy broker service.

PFT: Colts acquire CB Davis from Dolphins

Carolina Panthers v New York JetsGetty Images

Jets fans were booing.

And they had every right. After paying full fare for tickets, and parking, and (hopefully) beer, they were forced to watch the Jets offense.

But at least the Jets are consistent.

Even after getting a turnover and a short field (taking over at the Panthers 12-yard line), the Jets starting offense continued to pitch a shutout in the preseason, failing to get into the end zone.

If you?re scoring at home (and they?re not, or on the road either), that?s 15 possessions for the starters in the preseason, and no touchdowns. The backups haven?t scored either, leaving no hope that personnel changes are going to fix things.

While it?s easy to rail on quarterback Mark Sanchez, it?s misguided as well, as he suffered through several dropped passes.?They actually looked competent early in the game running no-huddle, but that didn?t last long.

But Sanchez was unnecessarily glib on the sidelines, joking with Michelle Tafoya that they were saving all their touchdowns for the regular season.

For it to have been funny, there would have to be an expectation this wasn?t actually what they are.

The good news is the Jets defense was strong.

It better be.

Here are some other things we learned on Sunday Night Football.

1. There were cheers when Tim Tebow took the field.

I?m not sure anymore if they were sarcastic or sincere.

Of course, when he got a few plays under his belt, they were booing him too. Those were sincere.

The Jets night in a nutshell was when he jumped up to celebrate a surprising first-down scramble, and a few plays later, threw an ugly pick.

End well, this will not.

2. Cam Newton can make plays even without a gaudy stat line.

He was a positively Tebowian 6-of-15 passing for 60 yards and a touchdown, and ran twice for 16 yards.

But he makes the Panthers offense move.

They don?t want him to run as much on purpose this year, but the threat of him making a decision on a zone read is enough to freeze opponents for a second and buy time for him to do something else with it.

3. There should have been more cheers for Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis, playing his first preseason game since his surgery to repair his third torn ACL.

Davis has incredible gifts, or had them before his knee was shredded. He can still run well, and the Panthers are going to spot him in rather than try to ask him to play every snap.

As a blitzer and a guy who can drop back and cover tight ends, he?s still good.

But they?ll probably never stop holding their breath every time he hits the ground.

4. The Jets offense has problems, but they are not without players on that side.?Problem is, they?re all getting hurt.

Tight end Dustin Keller left the game early with a hamstring problem, and then backup Josh Baker was take off with a right knee injury.

Whether it?s Sanchez or Tebow, the Jets need safe passes. And without a solid tight end out there (or even his backup), they have issues.

They should sign Jeremy Shockey, for comic relief if nothing else.

5. Not a banner night for the Panthers highly paid stable of running backs.

DeAngelo Williams fumbled twice, Jonathan Stewart was hauled off on a cart with an ankle injury, and Mike Tolbert was on the bench with a bag of ice on his knee.

Armond Smith and Josh Vaughan are up for contract extensions next.

6. The Jets got consistent pressure up front from their starting defense.

Quinton Coples and Muhammad Wilkerson in particular got a good push on a Panthers line that?s at least above average and may be very good.

They?re going to be asked to carry a team, and they may be able to.

7. The Panthers have apparently elected to go with slow and steady over athletic ability at free safety.

Former Ravens backup Haruki Nakamura (who was stuck behind some guy named Ed Reed) got the start and took all the work with the first offense.

Former second-round pick Sherrod Martin, who unlike Nakamura has range, is now a bench warmer.

This was initially a competition, but it appears the Panthers have made their decision. Martin?s such a better athlete it?s comical, but he had a series of gaffes in coverage last year that even had the owner cracking on him.

Basically, they?re electing to go with a limitation they can plan on rather than guessing where the more talented Martin will be.

8. The Panthers offense wasn?t very good either. But unlike the Jets, they had a reason.

Without wide receiver Steve Smith, the Panthers offense is completely different. He?s the vertical threat that makes everything else work.

The good news is, he?s going to be OK after dealing with an infection in his foot.

Sciatica Pain Relief and Pregnancy | ArticlePDQ.com

Sciatic pain as all sufferers are aware is that pain which, starting at the foundation of the spine often runs through the buttocks, down along the leg and lower leg and into the base. That is bad enough but when compounded by the improvements to the body wrought by pregnancy can be debilitating. The sciatic nerve is the longest in the human body and runs from the lumbar area all the way to the foot, and explains why pain can be felt from the base of the spine to the foot and all points in between. That pain can often be associated with signs such as for example pain, pins and needles and numbness, specifically to the surface of skin. The pain can range in intensity from a dull pain to almost electrical surprise like pointed pains.Causes of sciatic pain in pregnancy can be different but when occurring in the 2nd and third trimesters is generally caused by the force caused by the developing baby as this is when the mind is largest. When this development and the positioning of the baby is the cause there are limited measures which is often taken. Severe pain could be handled by your physician with prescription medications but several health practitioners and mothers-to-be too, are averse to carrying this out and therefore it is advisable to get other methods of relief. Some girls find relief in resting on their part with a cushion between their knees. If you have use of a pool the wading in this could possibly offer wonderful relief, and this also has the advantageous asset of reducing the weight and therefore strain on the spinal column. Alternating warm and cold compresses can also provide some relief as can serious structure massage.Good pose is also essential. Do not stoop on the sciatic nerve as undue pressure is placed by this, also do wear flat or reduced heeled shoes as this really helps to distribute the human body weight more evenly. Sleep on your part on a strong bed and be specially cautious when leaving bed as this is when sciatic nerve damage could occur. When increasing move on to your area and allow your feet down to the ground first. Not all back pain is due to sciatica however. If your pain is limited to the little of the back and doesn?t increase any further, then the pain you?re experiencing is prone to be consequently of the increasing baby?s weight applying tension on the muscles of your lumbar region. A lot of sleep where the weight isn?t being carried by your back muscles is the best therapy in this case. Finally the good news is that the pain you?re experiencing from whatsoever cause will, in all probability end when your new child is born and the relief from the pain will be specifically enhanced by your happiness in the new arrival!

Romney stresses economy as convention nears

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Mitt Romney pledged to help women entrepreneurs and innovators eager to create small businesses on Saturday in an economy-themed countdown to the Republican National Convention, taking shape in a city bristling with security and bracing for a possible hurricane.

"Women in this country are more likely to start businesses than men. Women need our help," said the Republican presidential challenger, eager to relegate recent controversy over abortion to the sidelines and make the nation's slow economic recovery the dominant issue of his convention week.

The former Massachusetts governor campaigned with running mate Paul Ryan in battleground Ohio as delegates arrived in Florida by the planeload. Across town, technicians completed the conversion of a hockey arena along Tampa Bay into a red, white and blue-themed convention hall.

Weather permitting, the convention opens Monday with quick ratification of a conservative platform expected, followed by Romney's nomination in a traditional roll call of the states timed for network evening news coverage. It ends Thursday with his acceptance speech, a prime-time appearance aides hope will propel him into a successful fall campaign and eventually, the White House.

The polls made the race a close one, narrow advantage to Obama, as two weeks of back-to-back conventions approached. Hundreds of millions of dollars have been spent on television ads, with hundreds of million more to come, almost all of it airing in a small group of battleground states expected to settle the election.

The list included Florida as well as North Carolina, where the Democratic National Convention will be held in one week's time.

After Romney's uneven run through the primary contests of winter and spring, the GOP convention was made to order for him from start to finish. Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich and other foes from the long-ago primaries weren't even a nuisance as the four-day event approached.

But the same couldn't be said for Tropical Storm Isaac, lashing Haiti and Cuba as it churned menacingly through the Caribbean.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott declared a state of emergency as the storm approached the Florida Keys, more than 400 miles from Tampa. Forecasters said it was on a track to head west of the convention city, but predicted strong winds and rain at a minimum on Monday as the delegates meet.

"We are a hospitality state. We know how to take care of people and we want to ensure their safety," Scott said.

Apart from weather concerns, a heavy security presence was already in evidence. Miles of fencing were designed to create a secure zone around a tract of land that included the convention hall, the hotel where Romney will stay and a nearby convention center where journalists and others worked.

With demonstrations expected in the days ahead, National Guard troops armed with rifles patrolled nearby streets. They augmented police out in force, some on bicycles. Authorities reported no arrests.

Obama did his best to intrude on the Republican unity tableau.

In an interview with The Associated Press, he accused Romney of holding "extreme positions" on economic and social issues, while pledging a willingness on his own part to agree to "a whole range of compromise" with Republicans if he is re-elected.

He did not elaborate, but his pledge seemed designed to appeal to independents and other voters who say they are tired of seemingly perpetual campaign bickering and Washington gridlock.

But Romney said Obama's entire campaign rested on his ability to persuade people to ignore his record and listen instead to his rhetoric.

"It is not his words people have to listen to. It's his action and his record," he said in his appearance in Powell, Ohio. "And if they look at that, they'll take him out of the office and put people into the office who'll actually get America going again."

Romney's speech included an appeal to women made on economic grounds rather than on the basis of social issues like abortion, the sort of approach the Republican hopes will eat into Obama's polling advantage among female voters.

"I want to make sure that we help entrepreneurs and innovators. I want to speak to the women of America who have dreams, who begin businesses in their homes, who begin businesses out in the marketplace, who are working at various enterprises and companies," he said.

"... Our campaign is about making it easier for entrepreneurs, women and men, to start businesses, to grow businesses," Romney said. He said most jobs are created by small businesses rather than larger firms or corporations.

Romney envisioned an economic resurgence fueled by abundant energy, expanded trade and a skilled workforce. If that happens, "America is going to surprise the world. We're going to stand out as a shining city on a hill in part because of our extraordinary economy," he said to the cheers of an estimated 5,000 supporters.

Romney's determination to turn the campaign's attention to the economy follows two weeks of controversy over Medicare, courtesy of Obama's campaign, as well as abortion, the result of a comment by Rep. Todd Akin, the party's candidate in a Senate race in Missouri.

Romney joined an unsuccessful effort by party leaders to force Akin to quit his race after he said women who are raped rarely become pregnant, a view unsupported by medical evidence.

He also fought back hard in recent days in person and television advertising against Obama's allegations that he and running mate Ryan would remake Medicare in a way that would undermine the health of future seniors.

Romney's objective appears to be to erode Obama's advantage among women voters and those who say Democrats are better equipped to handle Medicare, the giant health care program for seniors.

In the AP interview, Obama said it was Romney's promises that represented the real threat to the economy and the pocketbooks of millions.

"Mitt Romney is proposing a $5 trillion tax cut that disproportionately goes to the wealthiest Americans. And he will pay for that by gutting investments in things like education, infrastructure, basic science and research, voucherizing Medicare...."

Inside the Tampa Bay Times Forum, thousands of inflated red, white and blue balloons nestled in netting high above the arena floor, ready to be dropped in the traditional convention finale on Thursday night.

Technicians tested the microphones installed for each delegation, who will sit at the foot of a vast, made-for-television podium. Teleprompters where Romney will be able to see his acceptance speech scroll by were loaded ? with phrases from Abraham Lincoln's immortal Gettysburg Address, lest the words the Republican presidential contender will use to launch his fall campaign for the White House leak in advance.

Dragons... For hundreds of years, these majestic masters of the sky graced the world of Lyte; epics have been written narrating tales of their illustrious pearly scales glittering high in the air, dipping in betweenst the cloud not unlike dolphins. Though they were a creature of unquestionable beauty, their ferocity in combat was equally unmatched--or so we all thought.

Dragon hunters arose in legions, eager to prove their might against the fiercest of all. Not all succeeded, but those who managed to somehow best the beasts were treated with honor and nobility, for if one could beat the Masters of the Sky, truly they must be incredible. Unbeknownst to the people of Lyte, the hunting of dragons were dwindling their numbers down to a dangerous few, but when they finally realized their mistake, it was too late, and the last of the dragons fell to the blade.

We now live in a time without dragons... o'er a hundreds cycles have passed. None could claim to witness one with their own eyes, and so they began to fade unto stories of regret and sorrow. Decades past in the blink of an eye, though the extinction of the Great Race still weighed heavily upon the shoulders of humans. Dragons became revered and even worshiped in some villages.

Suddenly, as if to answer their prayers, a group arose by the name of the Draconic Vigil. They were a long-aged, traditional collective whose birth rose--in secret--with that of the first dragon hunters. They brought with them out of hiding the greatest gift the world had ever seen--dragon eggs. The followers of the Draconic Vigil were given an entire valley to use as a sanctuary, in the hopes that the Great Race could be risen from the ashes, and the mistakes of the past could be washed away clean. This wondrous valley came to be know as...

Dracona Valley

Some years have passed, and you have been chosen by the Draconic Vigil to be allowed entry into their sanctuary to do one thing, and one thing only: Adopt-a-Dragon. Why you, you may ask yourself. It is unsure of the method of selection the Draconic Vigil uses in such times, however they are always certain of their choice. A human must be paired up with a dragon if it is to be brought up in a world of humans. It is with this hope that when the dragons flourish freely once more, it will be as a friend of mankind. This is the highest honor of the past several ages; your home village is in such an ecstatic uproar that they throw a grand festival in your name, for bringing invaluable amounts of honor to your own. Once you've had some time to prepare, you set out on the journey across Lyte--your pilgrimage to Draconia Valley.

All the while, you know that once there you will be asked what type of dragon you'll want to adopt...

Will you choose a green dragon?

If nature is your thing, then you might just click very well with this particular type of dragon. In their own time, they were the protectors of the forests and all things living. As such, they were known to be fiercely loyal to those they considered worthy of their devotion. Their scales were said to be among one of the most breathtaking sights in all the land.

No? Perhaps a blue dragon would be right up your alley.

Armadent of our shores and seas, these particular breed of dragon was known to be the fastest fliers. Their bodies supported a more slender frame and and a wider wingspan, all in the preparation for long-term flights, almost making their endurance exceptionally good.

Still scrolling? Then surely a red dragon will tickle your fancy?

Overseer of the mountains and volcanic regions, this breed of dragon is known for having the greatest mastery over fire, and as such, can learn how to use it at a much earlier age. These intelligent dragons grow to be the second largest dragon, while keeping an average level of competence in agility and fighting, making this the most well-rounded dragon.

No...surely you aren't considering a black dragon?

You just might be that crazy, are you? These flying leviathans are by far the biggest dragon out of all the breeds. They are the Shadow Stalkers; The Living Nightmares; The Flying Death. Taming these dragons will be no simple task as you will soon notice they will outgrow you by a very young age. These dragons have a short temper and a nasty habit of not playing by the rules. If one could successful tame one though... that would be a sight to see. Then again, no one has ever raised a dragon from a hatchling before...ANY type of dragon!

Hello everyone! I go by the name Mazzy, and I'll be the GM of this RPG. I want to make something very clear right now: This is just going to be a 1-on-1 roleplay, which means I'll only be taking on one person to join me on this adventure!] Why, you ask? To be honest, I tried this type of RP once before, and I eventually had to abandon it because it overburdened me with too much to keep track of! You'll see why in a second when I go over what I'm offering as apart of this RP. The style we will be playing is that YOU will be the adventitious youth hoping to come and tame a dragon, while I'll be playing as...well, everything else! I will control the environments, NPCs, and random events that may happen over the course of the story.

Another reason why this is only going to 1-on-1 now... I've never done this before! Yes, I will admit to my newbiness when it comes to being a GM. I want to get my feet wet before I jump right in. Once I'm satisfied that I can even handle this RP with one person, I may consider making this a group RP, but until that time it's going to be one person.

What this RP will offer you:
+An engaging and expansive world to expore
+A quest system to keep track of what jobs need to be done
+Working marketplace
+Full map of the valley
+Dragon statistics so you know the well-being of your own dragon
+A unique dragon age-to-skill ratio that is dependent on how active and loyal you are.
+Several grand games for you and your dragon to participate in (races, fights, ect.)
+Scores of likable NPCs to interact with and befriend

What I expect from you:
+Literate RPer (Not for first-timers, sorry!)
+Guaranteed activity (The health of your dragon will depend on it!)
+A love for creativity. Just because I'm the GM, don't feel intimidated to do what you want to do! I'm providing the world and the characters, now you provide the adventure! (Note: I will also be providing quests along the way to help keep it going)
+No post limit! I understand that sometimes a post has to be short to accommodate dialogue, though I would prefer love to see a few paragraphs every post! A short post every now and again is just fine though!

Note that this project is still in it's infancy, and will take a bit longer for me to fully think out. I'm posting this right now to see if anyone would be interested in participating. Should I get some positive feedback, I will eventually make the RP and announce it to any player who asks for it (if you think you would be interested in this RP, post here saying so, and I'll PM you when it's all complete!). In the possibility that more than one person wants to join, then when the RP is created, those applicants will each create a bio for their character, and the one who I think will click with this story the best will get in. For anyone else I give my sincerest apologies, and the promise that someday in the future I will make this a group RP, and you will be among the first I call.

Implying I get anyone who wants to do this. >.>

FAQ

Who controls my dragon, me or you?

You do! Let me worry about the boring statistics while you just enjoy time with your dragon.

How will the storyline start out?

With you first entering the Valley. Picking your dragon will be part of the storyline.

You mentioned something about a map. What will be in the valley?

Like I said, this is a work-in-progress, and as such I'm still working on that. I can tell you that there'll be a few distinct districts (Residential, marketplace, ect) for you to explore.

Does my activity REALLY effect my dragon's health?

Oh absolutely! The longer you are away, the greater your dragon's susceptibility to disease. Remember: a happy dragon means better stat bonuses!

What good are stats if I can't do anything with them?

Ah, but you can. Within the world there will be plenty of fun adventures for you and your dragon. The higher your stats, the higher chance of success. Also, certain quests will require certain stats.

I kind of want the black dragon now that you said I was crazy... made me feel all big and stuff. Is it really as hard as you say though?

Yes, a black dragon will be substantially harder to control, and it's loyalty harder to earn.

Is the black dragon going to be overpowered?

Not at all! All the dragons will be fairly balanced if you decide to compare them. It comes down to what you're looking for in a dragon: loyalty, speed, intelligence, or size. This isn't to say that if you choose a blue dragon, it won't be loyal to you. It just might be harder to gain its loyalty than a green dragon. Vice versa, it might be a bit more difficult to teach a green dragon to fly as well as a blue dragon.

Feel free to ask any and all questions that you have, and I'll answer them in full.
