Few years ago, cancer was incurable disease. But, by time we had made lots of treatments for cancer. When people think for a treatment, they are full of questions and need to know how it works. What are the benefits of this treatment? Why people are using it? Is there any side effect?
When we go for a cancer treatment, we get lots of alternatives,Radiation therapy is one of them. It is used to directly attack on affected cell.
What is radiation therapy?
This therapy is also known as radiotherapy. In this therapy, some energy (radiation) used to kill cancer cells or shrink them to stop growing. It is commonly used with surgery and chemotherapy. Radiation therapy is used, where cure is not possible and the aim is for local disease control or where the therapy has survival benefit and it can be curative. Radiation dose for each affected cell is depend on the number of factors.
Radiation therapy is used in cure of-
It is mostly used in brain cancer, lung cancer, skin cancer, breast cancer, spine cancer, uterus cancer, cervix cancer, pancreas cancer, larynx cancer and prostate cancer. It is also used in cancer of blood forming cells. Some times radiation is given to the cells which are do not have evidence of cancer. This is used to prevent healthy cell by growing cancer cells.
What are the methods of radiation therapy?
There are three methods-
1. External therapy
2. Internal therapy
3. Systemic therapy
External radiation is used at the time of surgery or at primary stage of high risk brain cancer. In this therapy most patient do not need to stay at hospital. In internal therapy we use radiation which is placed very close to the affected area, by implant. In systemic therapy we inject radiation in the body or insert it by mouth.
Is this therapy makes patient radioactive?
Before taking radiation therapy patient ask this question. The answer is that, it is depend on the type of radiation therapy you are using. External therapy will not make patient radioactive. But, internal therapy involves implant, so patient stay at hospital is needed.
