Saturday Morning Breakfast & Baseball: Ozzie Drama, New Rays Ballpark, Ichiro & His Bats, and More

In today's B&B, we look at (more) Ozzie Guillen drama in Miami, a potential new Rays ballpark that won't happen, Ichiro's obsession with his bat care, biased announcers, Glen Perkins going pitch-by-pitch through a save with Joe Posnanski, and the result of Citi Field moving in their fences.

Welcome to Saturday, everyone! With the changes to Twinkie Town and the whole SB Nation, I was going to try to create a new account for myself. You see, I've been logging in through Facebook this whole time, which is why my whole name always appears whenever I author an article or game thread. This morning, I decided to fix that with a new account, and so I came to Twinkie Town with that mission in mind. However, I quickly found that my desired username "Bryz" has already been taken... and then I remembered why. Long ago, I created an account with that username, except I immediately forgot the password. Thus, the username is already in use by myself, ugh. So, it looks like I'll be stuck with most of my full name for now, meaning that I'll remain just as famous as Ryan Rowland-Smith when it comes to baseball and hyphenated last names.

  • Just like in Boston with Bobby Valentine, it's becoming messy down in Miami with Ozzie Guillen. We all know him quite well from his White Sox days, and it looks like his actions just aren't as fun when the team isn't winning. First, let's backtrack a bit. Closer Heath Bell, who was a big Marlins free agent signing last offseason, has been pitching awfully this year. He was stripped of the closer role and despite pitching better of late, hadn't received it back from Ozzie. Bell went on a Miami radio show to complain about Ozzie, saying "It's hard to respect a guy that doesn't tell you the truth." Bell would later say that he was taken out of context, but if this wasn't a big deal, he wouldn't have had to backtrack and say that his words were twisted. Anyway, Ozzie then went on a radio show himself to complain about Bell, and to make it really awkward, the media walked into the clubhouse right as the Marlins team was listening to Ozzie trash Bell on the air. To make it even worse, Ozzie was asked if he respected Bell and his response was, "As a player, yes. As a guy, I don't know." Showtime must be kicking themselves for ending "The Franchise" early with this team, and I bet either Ozzie or Bell will leave the team sometime before next season.
  • Darryl LeClair is a developer in St. Petersburg, FL, and he has an idea on getting a new ballpark for the Tampa Bay Rays. That's not a bad idea, considering that Tropicana Field is essentially Metrodome South, except instead of having a roof that interfered with an outfielder's ability to catch fly balls, it has catwalks that interfere with an outfielder's ability to catch fly balls. However, there are some issues. First, no one knows how the stadium will be funded. Second, the Rays and MLB haven't announced if they even want LeClair working on the ballpark. Third, LeClair's proposed land for the park is only 12 acres (Target Field is built on only 12 acres, but that doesn't mean it's recommended for all parks). Finally, which surprisingly wasn't mentioned in the article, the Rays are contracted to play in Tropicana Field for the rest of eternity until 2027. But hey, good luck to ya, LeClair.
  • Alright, saying he's obsessed was probably the wrong word. It's more like he's meticulous. Ichiro Suzuki recapped how he takes care of his bats, which involves a black case that dehumidifies the bats. Ichiro believes that a bat with too much moisture becomes spongy and "sweaty," which will soften the impact of the bat meeting a baseball. It's a pretty interesting read, especially when we learn that he actually once broke a bat in a fit of anger back in 1999. Even more interesting is that he later called the bat manufacturer to apologize.
  • We have another story on bias and baseball announcers, but last time dealt with race. This time, we're looking at an announcer's bias towards his team he's covering, and you will be absolutely shocked to hear who came out with an easy victory in this department. None other than the man that touts the White Sox, Hawk Harrelson. Yes, it wasn't even close, as Hawk and his partner Steve Stone combined to say 103 biased comments (saying "we," calling the Sox "good guys," his annoying phrases) in a single game, while the 2nd place team was the Cleveland Indians with 23. The link above is the Wall Street Journal article about the study, while this is the tallies for every team in the league. Two things: The Twins ranked rather high (tied for 7th), but Dick 'n' Bert had only 9 biased comments during the game that was analyzed, and I'm shocked the Marlins guys didn't have more during the game (5th, 15 comments). You should watch MLB Network to catch my drift.
  • Our once hated, now beloved reliever Glen Perkins walked Joe Posnanski through his recent save against the Yankees from Wednesday night. The reason Posnanski approached him was to focus on how an athlete bounces back from a significant mistake. In Perk's case, he allowed a solo home run with 2 outs to Andruw Jones that cut the lead to 1, but he bounced back to strike out Jayson Nix to end the game. You get some pretty cool insight on what Perkins does to get ready before an appearance, how he approaches each batter (he doesn't want to know who he's facing until he gets to the mound), and how a player's cleats helped him relax on the mound.
  • Finally, here's another #CrankyBryz rant, but it's tame compared to my last one. After repeated complaints, the New York Mets finally moved in their fences to appease the hitters. Well, it certainly worked, as 47 more home runs were hit this year compared to last. However, the new fences ended up benefiting the opposition slightly more than the Mets, as the road teams hit 25 HR that would not have cleared the old fences, while the Mets hit 21 of those cheap dingers. The reason moving in the fences annoys me is because it's seemingly always done with the home hitters in mind, but it completely ignores the pitchers and the fact that moving the fences will benefit the opponents as well. In this case, while it was a small difference, it helped the Mets' opponents more than the Mets themselves. Target Field is becoming more hitter-friendly this year, but this is still something you should remember the next time the spacious confines of the Twins' home ballpark is mentioned.

The Twins and #SpoilerTour2K12 continues this afternoon against the Tigers. It's my final game for this season, and perhaps I'll see you there!

Could we use open-source tools to improve politics? ? Tech News ...

Open-source principles have helped create a host of useful software, including the Linux operating system and the crowd-powered resource that is Wikipedia ? but could the same approach be used to open up the process of producing government legislation? Clay Shirky argues that it could.

The philosophy behind open-source software has been used to create an operating system and a pretty powerful crowdsourced encyclopedia, among other things, so could adopting that same approach change the way that politics and government work for the better? That?s the idea media theorist Clay Shirky has proposed in a TED talk in Edinburgh. The idea is an appealing one ? to use the same process behind Linux and Wikipedia to make government more collaborative and open ? but would it work? Developing software and web services is very different thing from creating legislation, and the history of the open-source movement is fraught with infighting among quasi-religious factions. But it may be the best hope we have.

After giving a kind of whirlwind tour of the open-source movement in his talk, including the rise of Linux, Shirky devoted much of his discussion to Github ? a kind of crowdsourced platform for maintaining code that Linux creator Linus Torvalds also created, which allows anyone to edit, to ?fork? or create their own version, and to track the changes that others make. It?s not a big stretch to get from that idea to the idea of crowdsourcing legislation, which is what Shirky seems to have in mind, and there have already been some attempts at doing this via Github: for example, a German software developer has uploaded all of Germany?s laws to the platform so that citizens can recommend and track changes.

It?s an intriguing idea: that a simple software platform aimed at collaboration could change the way legislation is developed and implemented, much like the process that powers Wikipedia has created a crowdsourced encyclopedia that evolves and changes over time. But is it realistic? There were plenty of skeptics who said Wikipedia would never succeed, and yet it has an excellent track record when it comes to reliability, despite some hiccups in the process, such as the recent incident involving author Philip Roth. That said, however, there are also plenty of critics who believe that the ?cabal? of editors who control the crowd-powered encyclopedia have too much authority.

Of course, some would argue that we?re already in that kind of situation with most governments anyway, and therefore Github couldn?t make things any worse. And Shirky is not the only one to make this argument: developer Abe Voelker has proposed a ?Github for laws? that would take exactly the same approach to crafting and crowdsourcing legislation. There have also been some initial experiments with similar ideas ? including Iceland?s new constitution and similar types of project in Finland and Ireland ? which shows that others are also open to the concept.

One of the problems with applying a technical solution like Github to a massive cultural and political process like government, however, is that creating laws ? even small ones ? is very different from changing a piece of code so that Linux can duplicate Windows-style typefaces, or changing the Wikipedia entry on George Bush. And if even those kinds of prosaic examples can lead to the equivalent of a Linux or Wikipedia holy war, which in many cases they have, what hope do we have that politicians can actually use a similar process to change the way that government works? As Shirky suggests in his talk, there?s also a pretty entrenched bureaucracy that has become part of most governments and likely has no interest in relinquishing that control to the crowd.

In his book ?Here Comes Everybody,? Shirky described the potentially massive impact of crowdsourcing and crowd-powered social change, and his admiration of Github seems to be part of an attempt to find tools that will help us deal with the tidal wave of human-driven collaboration. This is something we clearly need, so it?s worthwhile to start looking at solutions ? and while Github may not be the answer, at this point just about anything is probably worth a shot.

99% Finding Nemo 3D

All Critics (222) | Top Critics (45) | Fresh (232) | Rotten (2) | DVD (48)

A genuinely funny and touching film that, in less than a decade, has established itself as a timeless classic.

It makes even more compelling what is still my all-time favorite Pixar film.

Think of this re-release as an encore, a handy touchstone for you and your kids. "Finding Nemo" was and remains the gold standard against which all other modern animated films are measured, a classic from the day it premiered.

In this seamless blending of technical brilliance and storytelling verve, the Pixar team has made something as marvelously soulful and innately, fluidly American as jazz.

Nemo, with its ravishing underwater fantasia, manages to trump the design glamour of earlier Pixar films.

Gill is Platoon's Sgt. Elias if he'd survived Sgt. Barnes' treachery and returned to civilian life weary and hard-bitten from his experiences. And also a fish.

Finding Nemo 3D is a quality post-conversion experience that successfully enhances the 2003 film's original standout visuals.

The 3D gives the images a little more depth but they already had heft and weight. The 3D is a money-making gimmick, nothing more.

A great blend of storytelling and technology.

It's downright curmudgeonly to remain focused on the negatives when the rest of the picture is saturated with invention and wit.

It's bright, it's beautiful and it hasn't aged a day. So why, then, do we need to see it in 3-D?

A rare example of a movie that not only survives its 3-D conversion but benefits from it

It was as funny as I remember and brilliant because it is subtle. It just knocks it out of the park. I love everything about this movie, one of my favorite Pixar movies of all time, 5/5 Schmoes. The new sound/3D adds to the greatness that is Nemo.

If you're fishing for fun in an ocean of movie mediocrity, grab the kids or the grandkids, fork out a few extra bucks and see this one in three-dimensions.

It's a great movie, so much fun, an acheivement that should be enjoyed by children of all ages and worth seeing it in 3D.

Sea-worthy w/enhanced visual lure and rich, humorous characters set in a double narrative; this 3D revisit allows us to fall overboard all over again.

If ever there was a film that wasn't broke, this is it. So naturally they converted it into 3D for a special re-release this weekend. (Stupid irony.)

I believe my sensitivity to certain creative choices of the picture has dulled some, while age has opened my eyes to its complex relationships and tireless sense of exploration.

When the blunt head of Bruce the shark slams into the screen like a hammer, everyone -- adults included -- gasps

At its best, the added dimension is merely harmless, making the movie blurry enough that you need special glasses to make it sharp again.

Are You A Small Business?

The U.S. Small Business Administration has been busy finalizing rules that may alter the standards for defining a small business.

The SBA issued three final rules in the Federal Register, effective Oct. 24, 2012, increasing size standards for firms in three North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) Sectors:

  • Real Estate and Rental and Leasing
  • Educational Services
  • Health Care and Social Assistance

Size standards define the maximum size a firm can be and still be considered a small business.

The SBA said the new size standards could enable more businesses in these sectors to obtain or retain small business status. It could also give federal agencies a larger pool of small businesses from which to choose for their procurement programs. Additionally, the standards could also make more small businesses eligible for SBA?s loan programs.

SBA increased size standards for businesses in 21 industries in the Real Estate and Rental and Leasing Sector.? More than 13,000 additional firms will qualify as small under these new size standards and become eligible for SBA loan and federal procurement programs.

SBA also increased size standards for 9 industries for firms in the Educational Services Sector.? More than 1,500 additional businesses will qualify as small under the new size standards and become eligible for SBA loan and federal procurement programs.

Size standards for 28 industries were also increased for firms in the Health Care and Social Assistance Sector. More than 4,100 additional firms will qualify as small under these new size standards and become eligible for SBA loan and federal procurement programs.

To review the three rules and public comments, go to www.regulations.gov.? Each has a separate Regulation Identifier Number (RIN) number:

  • Real Estate and Rental and Leasing ? (RIN 3245-AG28)
  • Educational Services ? (RIN 3245-AG29)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance ? (RIN 3245?AG30)

The SBA issued a white paper entitled ?Size Standards Methodology? which explains how SBA establishes, reviews and modifies its receipts-based and employee-based small business size standards. The white paper is available here.

West Bank college puts Israeli policies to the test

ARIEL, West Bank (Reuters) - An Israeli government move to upgrade Ariel University Centre in the occupied West Bank to a full-fledged university has put the 30-year-old school at the centre of a debate at the core of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict: how the settlements will figure in defining a future Palestinian state.

The cabinet decision on September 9, equating it with universities inside Israel, is another signal from the Israeli government that it intends to retain control of the area around Ariel settlement in any future peace pact with the Palestinians.

The decision has come under attack from several directions, including the Palestinians and international opponents of the West Bank settlements.

The move would "further entrench the presence of settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territories and create an additional barrier to peace with the Palestinians", British Foreign Secretary William Hague said.

More than 1,000 Israeli scholars wrote in an open letter posted on the Internet in February that it was their "duty to stop the attempt to recruit Israeli academia into the service of the occupation" and called on the education minister to halt the upgrade.

In addition, the heads of seven of Israel's eight universities have petitioned the Supreme Court to stop the upgrade on grounds it will soak up government funds for top schools.

The change still needs final approval from Israeli military authorities in the West Bank, territory captured in a 1967 Middle East war. But officials at the university say that is just a formality now that the government has given the green light.

Supporters of the upgrade, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, say it was long overdue.

"Ariel is an inseparable part of the State of Israel and it will remain an inseparable part of the State of Israel in any future (peace) agreement, just like the other settlement blocs," Netanyahu said before the cabinet vote.

Israel has sent mixed signals in the past over whether the enclave, with a population of 17,000, would be included in the major settlement blocs it says will remain in Israeli hands permanently.

Netanyahu added: "Another university has not been added in decades. The population of Israel has doubled (since)... There is a strong desire on the part of young people in Israel to receive a university education."

VIEW OVER SETTLEMENT, VILLAGES

The West Bank is home to about 340,000 settlers and 2.5 million Palestinians. The settlements, which the World Court has deemed illegal, were the reason why talks between Israel and the Palestinians broke down in 2010.

When Chancellor Yigal Cohen-Orgad, then a lawmaker in the right-wing Likud party now led by Netanyahu, joined a small group of professors and settler leaders in establishing the Ariel school in 1982, they had two aims: strengthening Jewish settlement in the area and meeting a growing demand in Israel for a university education.

"We wanted to get two birds with one stone," he said.

Israeli governments have expanded the settlements in the West Bank over the past 40 years while maintaining that their final status should be determined in a peace agreement with the Palestinians.

The government of then-Prime Minister Ariel Sharon started the process toward Ariel college's upgrade to university status in 2005. Two years later, Sharon's successor, Ehud Olmert, granted the school the temporary status of "university centre".

Ariel now has 13,000 students and hopes to increase that number to 20,000 by the year 2025. Its campus, about a 25-minute drive from Tel Aviv, stretches across hilltops dotted with olive trees and overlooks Palestinian villages and the high-rise apartment blocs of Ariel settlement.

"I JUST WANT MY DEGREE"

While geopolitics may have played a part in the foundation of the school, students and faculty say academics are what matters to them.

Sitting in the library studying, Dael Danino and Barak Akerman, two aspiring engineering students, were most concerned about their coming physics exam.

"The location (of the college) and strengthening settlements was not a consideration for me," said Akerman, who lives in a nearby settlement. "I'm not here because of ideals, I just want my degree."

Danino travels to the university every day from the central Israeli city of Ramat Gan.

"Turning the university into a college was a professional move, not a political one," he said.

Dr. Alex Schechter, head of the biological chemistry department, said the college faculty came from across the political spectrum.

"The only thing that unites us is that we want to advance science," he said in his laboratory, surrounded by computers, test tubes and busy researchers in white lab coats.

"My presence here has no (political) goal. The science I do here is the same I'd be doing anywhere else."

For other academics, concern over upgrading Ariel is focused on having to share another piece of the government funding pie and whether Ariel is academically qualified to be a university.

Professor Rivka Carmi, head of Ben-Gurion University in southern Israel, said funding for Ariel would ultimately come at the expense of other universities' research and teaching.

"Upgrading this institution cheapens the term 'research university' and the criteria for such status," she said in an email exchange.

Ariel rejected such accusations in a statement in August responding to the Supreme Court petition, and said that the "cartel of university heads" was scared of losing its monopoly.

PALESTINIANS CALL FOR BOYCOTT

Cohen-Orgad said that about 5 percent of Ariel's budget comes from donations. Those include contributions from prominent Israeli businessmen and private foreign donors.

One contributor is Irving Moskowitz, a Florida bingo magnate known for his financial support of Jewish settlers. The school did not provide details about the size of Moskowitz's donations, but its media school is named after him.

Ariel officials said the rest of the budget comes from the government and from companies that fund joint research and development projects.

About 15 percent of its students come from Jewish settlements, the institution said. Most commute from inside Israel and more than five percent are Israeli Arabs.

On Sept 13 the Palestinian Higher Education Office condemned the government decision to upgrade Ariel and called on universities worldwide to boycott it.

"The so-called university in the illegal Ariel settlement, as with any other settlement or settlement product, should be diplomatically, financially and academically rejected and isolated," a ministry statement said.

Cohen-Orgad said he was not concerned by such a call, although Ariel researchers are already effectively barred from applying for grants by some foundations that will not give money to Israeli research conducted in the West Bank.

He said the collaborative ties Ariel has maintained with universities and researchers around the world would continue.

"If they cooperated with us when we were a college and while we are a temporarily accredited university, do you think it will make a difference to them if we will be called Ariel University? Collaboration between scientists and institutions is based on a shared scientific interest," he said.

MintLife Blog | Personal Finance News & Advice | Moving Up: 5 ...

moving boxes

Whether you?re beginning your post-graduation career, received a cross-country job offer you can?t refuse, or are longing for a change of scenery, moving is an exciting, stressful, and budget-straining time.

This is especially true if your new locale is considerably more expensive than your current one.

Here are five steps you must take to preserve your finances before packing up for an expensive city.

Pull your credit report.

Home inventory in popular markets comes at a premium and can take time (and in some cases, a realtor) to find.

Before you start home or apartment shopping, financial advisor Xavier Epps of XNE Financial Advising, LLC says you must know your credit score?even if you?ve saved more than enough funds to move.

If your credit score isn?t strong (700 or above is generally considered a healthy score), this could hinder your ability to meet a landlord?s credit requirements for new tenants.

If you?ve got collection activity on your credit report, Epps suggests trying to settle and close unresolved issues at least two months in advance of completing a landlord?s credit application or applying for a home loan.

?In doing so, your credit score will feel some relief and move upward slightly, putting you in a better position to find a place to live.?

Know before you negotiate.

The cost of living in your new city may be double that of your current home?but that doesn?t mean your salary will get the same boost.

Epps suggests researching median incomes for your industry in your city of choice to establish a benchmark for salary norms before you discuss the topic with a potential employer.

If you?re moving before you find a job, he says to save at least five to ten percent of that median income before you move.

Consider your priorities.

?Expensive? is a relative term based on your experience.

For example, if you?re moving from Manhattan to San Francisco you won?t feel the same financial impact as a person moving from Atlanta will.

In fact, despite the fact that San Francisco is ranked as the fourth most expensive city in the country according to an index published by the Council for Community and Economic Research (C2ER), Manhattan-ites may actually save money making this move.

The index indicates that Manhattan is the priciest city in the country. Research cost of living calculators at reputable sites (Bankrate.com has a good one)?but also consider what those costs are based on, and which of them you can control.

For example, though real estate in Manhattan is notoriously expensive, the C2ER index shows that transportation and health care actually costs more in San Francisco.

While you must be realistic about what you can afford for basic needs, cost alone shouldn?t deter you from pursuing the life you want?provided you?re willing to make some concessions to make your residential dreams a reality.

If owning a home is a ?must? for example, moving to a city where you?ll always be priced out of the market doesn?t make financial sense.

But, if your primary goal is simply to live near a beach, and you?re willing to live with a roommate, use public transportation, and cut back on unnecessary spending, the move may not be out of reach.

Weigh the value of alternatives.

Bryan Robertson, a real estate broker of Sereno Group Real Estate who works in Silicon Valley, advises considering neighboring areas that are close the prime area you?d like to live in, but may cost a bit less.

He also suggests veering away from living in top school markets, explaining that homes in such neighborhoods will always cost more than comparable ones in nice neighborhoods with less celebrated school systems.

Ultimately, sending your children to private school may actually cost less than the price differential.

He also suggests considering the cost of commute time, and fuel, before committing to one area.

You may get more house for your buck when you live further from a metropolitan area, for example, but if that means doubling your commute to work, it may not be worth the overall cost savings.

Most importantly, keep an open mind and be prepared to make some adjustments. ?Focus on what your budget will allow in a new location, versus comparing what you had in your less expensive town,? says Robertson.

Save your receipts.

Remember that moving expenses are tax deductible, if you meet Internal Revenue Service criteria.

If you are moving to a new city for a job and paying for it out of your own pocket, you can deduct ?reasonable moving expenses? (not meals) as an adjustment to your income when you file yearly taxes.

Keep in mind that you move at least 50 miles away from your old home and old job location, and work full-time for at least 39 weeks during the first 12 months immediately following the move to qualify for the deduction.

Get Bacon in Every Bite of Your BLT with the Basket Weaving Technique [Food Hacks]

Get Bacon in Every Bite of Your BLT with the Basket Weaving TechniqueIf you're not getting bacon in every bite of your BLT, you're doing it wrong. Buzzfeed resolved this problem with a simple solution: extra bacon and the basket weaving technique.

As you can see in the photo above, you weave the strips of bacon together like you would a basket. This forms a nice square that fits perfectly on a sandwich and stays in place. While probably not the healthiest solution ever invented, it certainly solves the overly-frequent problem of bacon-less bites in BLTs.

PFT: Ref nightmare NFL feared has happened

PFT: Even before Monday night?s Packers-Seahawks game, the officiating lockout had reached a tipping point. Casual, Super-Bowl-only fans were buzzing about the brouhaha, and the NFL?s ?remain calm . . . all is well . . . ALL IS WELL!? mantra was regarded as laughable. But the NFL had been lucky. No game had been decided by a bad call in a decisive moment. So much for that.

Indian developers can now sell paid apps on Google Play Store

Google has now added India to the list of countries from where developers are allowed to sell paid apps on the Google Play Store. This move will allow individual app developers and development companies from India to sell their apps on Android devices and also enable in-app purchases.

Google had added a few more countries including Czech Republic, Israel, Poland and Mexico back in April, now it has enabled the same in India. While Google Play already allows users to purchase apps in INR, developers from India can now make some profit via the Play Store.

If you are a developer who is interested to start selling paid apps, it will cost you $25 USD to sign-up for the new developer account. This will allow developers to launch paid apps, include in-app purchases and launch a paid ad-free version for their ad-supported apps.

Greenlight Roundup 2 | Video Game Blog, Video Games Reviews ...

One computer failure too many has set this week?s roundup back a day, but nonetheless it arrives!

Compulsion Games are not the first developers to put a platformer like?Contrast?up on Greenlight. Black Forest Games??Project Giana?is somewhat similar in that both of these games are surreal platformer titles in which the player switches between two?different?aspects of the game world (the trailers for each are at the bottom), however the reason I am talking about?Contrast now?and didn?t talk about?Giana last week?is because the former seems to be more focused on telling a story with its gameplay and the challenge is actually ingrained in the levels? designs, while in the latter the gameplay is focused more on getting every crystal-point-whatsit on the stage, and the levels would otherwise be rather simplistic.

What you see in?Giana?s?trailer is literally a scaled down version of the entire first stage (as a video by Black Forest Games revealed), and it appears to rife with repetitive motions like the?Super Mario Galaxy?mid-air spin move. On the other hand, just look at all the nifty mechanics that reside in the teased stages of?Contrast; everything in it seems to contribute to the mood in substantial ways, and as far as platformers go, it seems to be a rather unique and enjoyable experience. Not to put?Project Giana?down, though, as both of these games seem delightful, but?Giana?seems geared more towards those willing to grind for every last hidden point- an audience that is substantially smaller than that of the fun-loving, intriguing world of?mystique?within?Contrast,?which has earned the up-vote of approval from?Greenlight Roundup.

It would take a smarter man than me to accurately describe this game, but it is nothing short of amazing. From the videos that are available of this game, it seems to mix some well designed platforming maps with strategic TBS combat, in the form of?aerial?drones,?controlled?by the player, able to move at varying speeds and carrying?specialized?weapons to present the player with a very wide number of unique strategies to explore. The game presents the potential to?emulate?much of what made?StarCraft?so popular back in the 90?s, but it doesn?t just copy the old ways; Kiritsu Games??Band of Drones takes?full advantage of its hybrid origins, integrating item pick-ups dropped by enemies, making heavy use of the game?s physics engine in combat, and?limiting?the player to a select few drones, rather than an entire army to make every small loss more significant.

In addition to its gameplay potential, the UI is highly customizable, and I personally adore the promise of an included level editor and a scenario-based campaign. However I get the biggest kick out of this: it is one of the very few games on Greenlight to feature Linux support. If you?re anything like me, you have been pining for Steam on Linux for quite some time, but my concern has always been a lack of good games supported on the OS. Sure source games will be there, eventually, but right off the bat, the Linux audience can look forward to this masterpiece, provided others follow in ?our footsteps and give this nifty creation a well-deserved up-vote.

There was quite nearly a bit about? The Slender Stories: The Orphanage?this week, but when the third Slender Man related game this?month?was announced yesterday (a commercial game this time around), it seemed as though?that?corner of the industry has gotten enough?attention?for now?
